"y" in name?
[edit]Is the extra "y" in the name (Spanish for "and") really correct? It seems like it might have came from the original source at a web site that is no longer there. The Spain web site and his family one do not use it. Of course the convention of appending his mother's maiden name might be the most authentic, as used in the Spanish site. Actually the signature seems to have another stroke between the words, which might be the "y"? W Nowicki (talk) 04:24, 6 April 2010 (UTC)
- When I researched it using books here in Hawaii, it had the y. Don't ask me which books, I don't remember! But if y is correct, shouldn't it be in the title too? Makana Chai (talk) 19:33, 6 April 2010 (UTC)
OK, it is not a typo, I did find some source that spelled it with the "y" too, but not the plurality. It is consistent with the biography manual of style to have the full name in bold while having the article title be the "most common name". Although I think the "Don" was just an honorary title, e.g. like "Sir" or "Mr" not part of his name. Some articles do have the "Don" in them, though, so not worth a change I think. As usual, Hawaiian people have many different names, especially in the 19th century. Mahalo. W Nowicki (talk) 02:27, 7 April 2010 (UTC)
- The y is wrong. This is used sometimes in Spanish to link the two surnames, but here Francisco de Paula is a compound name, and the two surnames are Marín and Grassi; so, the whole name with the y would be Francisco de Paula Marín y Grassi. I agree that Don is useless (it's like Mister in English, Monsieur in French or Herr in German; it's not a title like British Sir). The correct name of the article must be Francisco de Paula Marín. --Enric.enwiki (talk) 14:20, 23 September 2010 (UTC)
- The correct name in Spanish may be "Francisco de Paula Marin" but in Hawai'i during his lifetime he was known as Don Francisco de Paula y Marin, and that is how it is in the history books. I would oppose leaving off Don from the name of the article as it is not historically accurate and will cause confusion.Makana Chai (talk) 17:04, 23 September 2010 (UTC)
Don Marin Re-internment
[edit]The remains of Don Marin and sixteen of his immediate and extended family were exhumed from under the site of a City and County of Honolulu's municipal parking garage located between Smith and Maunakea Streets fronting Nimitz highway prior to the construction of the City's Marin Tower residential and commercial project.
All the remains were re-intered in individual Koa containers upon completion of the building in the same proximity to eacvh other layout as found on an undeveloped portion of the project property in a midnight ceremony that included both traditional Hawaiian and Catholic ceremonies.
The City understood that Don Marin had been excommunicated from the Catholic Church and his initial burial was supervised by a Protestant.
Officers with the City and County of Honolulu's Department of Housing and Community Development asked the Catholic Church if they would reconsider their previous position and permit a priest to officiate at Don Marin's re-internment. An investigation by the Church suggested that the excommunication was related to Don Marin's political activities and they agreed that he could be re-interred with a Cathoric ceremony. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Marintower (talk • contribs) 23:53, 10 December 2011 (UTC)

Problem with Image.
There appears to be a problem with the image of Francisco de Paula Marin Masselot (File:Francisco de Paula Marin Masselot.jpg). It seems to be taken from a portion of the picture labeled “Marín at Hale Kauila with the royal court receiving the French Captain Du Petit Thouars, 1837.” (File:Louis-Jules Masselot, Assemblée des Chefs des Iles Sandwich en conférence avec le Commandant de la Vénus.jpg) However it is a reverse or mirror image. I cannot tell which is the proper orientation. Hopefully someone can determine the correct orientation and fix one or the other of the images.Vigilfree (talk) —Preceding undated comment added 05:45, 6 June 2020 (UTC)
