Religious beliefs

[edit]

I added the note about RC because Lee has been mentioned wrt Scientology. I think this is suitable to mention this since he appears to have religious views. EncyclopediaUpdaticus (talk) 18:18, 24 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

It's relevant that he identifies as a Catholic (and not a Scientologist), but I'm not certain if it's necessary to say anything beyond that. The context of the quote isn't entirely clear, and, anyway, it's not really our task to distinguish devout from lapsed Catholics. CJCurrie (talk) 01:22, 27 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Anybody who sticks their nose into Scientology ought to be fully scrutinized. I think a full discussion about his religious beliefs is completely relevant. It gives an additional insight into his thinking process. Also would you please stop reverting my edit until we have completed this discussion? I agree that Lee's involvement with Scientology makes his religious identity a point of interest. The problem with the quote provided is that it (i) has nothing to do with his involvement with Scientology, (ii) is potentially out of context (it's not clear if Lee is talking about Catholicism or becoming a priest), (iii) adds little light to the broader situation. It really just seems to be an offhand remark, not particularly relevant to an encyclopedic project.
I could add that I'm a bit puzzled by the tone of your response. CJCurrie (talk) 00:09, 31 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I think it reads fine without "I have done some cursory reading. I'm not personally drawn to (Catholicism), but I have to say that about many religious faiths." The previous sentence seems to tactfully convey the understanding that his religious beliefs have migrated over time between the 2 mentioned (or neither). I don't think we should be going any deeper into the topic (regardless of whether the media wishes to). Deet (talk) 00:52, 31 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I don't think it's clear from the article that Lee actually said he was "no longer drawn to the Catholic religion", and I think our safest/best option would be to remove that statement as well. CJCurrie (talk) 02:35, 31 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I've been doing some research on Lee (and have added some additional stuff to the article). So far I have found only one other reference to Lee and religion. A 1989 Toronto Star article also mentioned that he was thinking of becoming a priest. As to the quote, I think it's appropriate to keep it but it could be framed better. I am continuing my research and may find additional sources. EncyclopediaUpdaticus (talk) 03:34, 31 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
On a related topic, ie. his personal beliefs, I have so far found references to Lee espousing anti-abortion views, anti same-sex marriage views, and he also supports the death penalty. Would it be fair to label him a social conservative? EncyclopediaUpdaticus (talk) 03:37, 31 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Unquestionably, yes. CJCurrie (talk) 03:46, 31 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Religious Beliefs - one year later

[edit]

I removed the following text from the article because it was not clear from the source that it was saying what was implied in the wikipedia article.

"He once considered becoming a priest but he is no longer drawn to the Roman Catholic religion. "I have done some cursory reading. I'm not personally drawn to (Catholicism), but I have to say that about many religious faiths."

If he considered becoming a priest, I'm sure he did more than cursory reading in regards to Catholicism. The source says:

Mr. Lee, who once considered becoming a priest, says he is not particularly interested in the church's teachings, however. "I have done some cursory reading. I'm not personally drawn to it, but I have to say that about many religious faiths."

I believe that "the church's teachings" here refers to Scientology, not to Catholicism. and that "I'm not personally drawn to it" again refers to Scientology, not Catholicism. DigitalC (talk) 17:29, 3 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]
