D.L. Hawkins

[edit]

Who is D.L. Hawkins? --Brown Shoes22 05:36, 19 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Feh. Gods of Wikipedia, forgive me. Ahem.

D.L. Hawkins is a fictional character in the TV series Heroes. He is wanted criminal man with the power to phase through solid objects. He is also the father of Micah Sanders and estranged husband of Niki Sanders. He ran with a crew of men who all wore skull rings.

As of the third episode, his mother Paulette and son have both apparently been in contact with him, and believe he is innocent. He has also escaped prison. He will be appearing in the next/fifth episode, as stated in TV Guide. Ace Class Shadow; My talk. 07:33, 19 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

He has also shown the power to effect mind readers and erase memories, its not mentioned in his official character bis so posting it as speculation?--Seth Turner 06:19, 25 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Ummm... How has he shown this? He's not the Guy with Bennet, if thats who your thinking of.. Either that or he can be in lots of places really quickly.. Because Bennet's assistant did a mind wipe in Odessa, then he wounded up stalking his wife in Vegas??? EnsRedShirt 06:24, 25 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Bennet's assistant was credited as 'Mysterious Man' for a whiel on IMDb, while DL has always been DL. while IMDb isn't a great citation source, the page also shows pictures, and you'll see the two are different characters. ThuranX 11:39, 25 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Totally different actors. Totally different characters. D.L. Hawkins, and The Mysterious Man, aka The Haitian. 144.15.255.227 02:05, 26 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I bet a lot of (*cough* white *cough*)people make that mistake in confusing the Mysterious Man and D.L. Perhaps that distinction should be put in the article?--Hypergeometric2F1(a,b,c,x) 03:47, 26 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Oh for god's sake. They're both darked skinned males with shaved heads. MM, a seemingly minor character, appearing long before D.L., a supposed major character, doesn't help matters, either. It's not racism or "just white people". Gees. Now, keep your comments to improving the article. And frankly, the distinction is made by the differing information. Ace Class Shadow; My talk. 02:31, 31 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
To make matters even worse, they also cast Nathan Petrelli's campaign manager as a dark skinned male with a shaved head. MahlerFan 19:34, 23 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Comparisons to other fictional characters

[edit]

An anonymous user has been contributing comparisons between D.L. (and other Heroes characters) to various comic book characters. I don't think such comparisons are helpful to a general readership and in some cases may be speculative or inaccurate. However, I cannot revert these additions any longer without violating the Wikipedia: Three Revert Rule. Primogen 19:27, 5 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Heh. Always good to call for help. Vandalism reverts are like bullets. "I'm out!" "I got 'em!" Flying is a fairly common power in superhero fiction, though. I wrote such in Nathan's PaA section. Ace Class Shadow; My talk. 22:06, 5 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Rifle shooting

[edit]

I realize the show is fiction, but I just recently watched "Fall out" and saw how "Jessica" shot DL with a high powered rifle through the shoulder. A rifle that size would have blown his arm off! Anyway, I just wanted to note that I’m going to edit a paragraph to show he was shot in the shoulder (which is usually a “non-fatal” area hit on main characters in movies and tv shows).(Ghostexorcist 22:31, 16 December 2006 (UTC))[reply]

Phasing

[edit]

If Hawkings has the ability to phase, should it not be only his body that phases? How is his clothes able to phase as well? The only answer I can think of is that any matter that is attached to him phases as well. If this is the case, he should have the ability to rescue Niki.Mdriver1981 04:18, 31 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Wearing matter and holding onto it are two different things; human matter and clothing are very different. Anyway, this isn't a forum to question the writers' logic. Ace Class Shadow; My talk. 05:04, 31 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I write that comment to encourage debate on whether the article should mention it. His powers seem more complex than the series suggest. In regards to phasing, how is matter different whether it is cloth or human flesh? One would think that Hawkings would have to be nude while phasing. I am simply pointing out that his clothes phases with his body. Maybe he has a phasing aura around his body?Mdriver1981 03:35, 1 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Mdriver1981: That is a pretty good observation. You think we should write about that in the article? BotchThis 02:39, 2 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I know this is getting into speculation, but could DL's ability not be a personal phase (phasing his arm), but phasing what he wants to go through(to unlock the door, he phased the door, not himself)? Just a thought. PureSoldier 15:04, 23 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Isn't that the same thing as phasing himself? And correct me if I'm wrong, but I think he phased his head when Jessica shot him. (Sorry, I forgot which episode). hippi ippi++++ 12:11, 25 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Not really. When you phase yourself, you shouldn't be able to interact with objects. If you phase objects, then you can interact with other objects, while still moving through the phased object. Phasing his own body would be part of phasing other things as well as phasing himself. PureSoldier 14:50, 1 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
If I recall correctly didn't he phase through a wall, grab Niki, and phase her and him back through? Or was it Micha? I swear I've seen him phase another person. Padillah 15:34, 27 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

How do we know that DL can only Phase himself? How do we know, like pure soldier said, that he can't phase objects, (like the door to stick his hand through), in addition to himself? 70.178.9.23 (talk) 15:48, 11 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Should we be calling this power "phasing"?

[edit]

Isn't that a Marvel universe phrase? Besides it could be misunderstood to imply the way his power works, which we don't know. Phasing refers to the ability to shift molecules out of phase with the current universe and thus pass harmlessly through them. I'm not sure this is what he does. (Having said that I can't come up with a better name, heh) Padillah 15:33, 27 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

move to D. L. Hawkins?

[edit]

I may be mistaken, but shouldn't there be a space between the D and the L? --Pentasyllabic 20:25, 29 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

You are mistaken. There are generally no spaces in between initialed names. --Harlequin212121 20:56, 15 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Actually it seems that spaces are standard on WP. Examples include H. G. Wells, J. R. R. Tolkien, E. E. Cummings, George H. W. Bush and others I'm sure. --Pentasyllabic 00:07, 5 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Has it even been stated that D.L. are initials? For all we know, it could be a nickname or something else. Ophois 02:56, 5 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Maybe it's like Harry S Truman's middle name. Padillah 20:39, 17 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Occupation

[edit]

Should one of his occupations be "Escaped criminal"? The charges that he was put in jail for were dropped, so if anything, shouldn't it be changed to "Former criminal" or "Former gang leader"? Ophois 23:05, 15 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

He was in prison and subsequently escaped. The description is valid. Windmillninja 03:57, 16 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
"Escaped criminal" isn't an occupation, though. "Former criminal" would be accurate, but I don't see how escaping from prison counts as an occupation. Ophois 04:03, 16 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Referring to a person who is acquitted of a crime as a criminal is slander or liable. Matthew 21:21, 29 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Former criminal was removed, but does anyone remember if it was mentioned if he committed any crimes as a gang leader? If so, I think "former criminal" should remain on the page, and if not, "former gang leader" should at least be put in its place. Ophois 19:09, 5 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Fair use rationale for Image:LeonardRoberts Heroes.jpg

I don't read the books

[edit]

Why did DL die?Kirby17 16:29, 9 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

We don't know. He was shot on the last day of Season 1 (8 November 2006), but his tombstone says that he died in 2007 (Kindred). This means he either convalesced for two months, or he didn't die from his gunshot wound, but by some other means yet to be revealed. ZZ Claims ~ Evidence 17:12, 9 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Doesn't dying mean your character is done?

[edit]

Are we going to keep all characters in perpituity just because they might make a cameo in a flashback or might be raised from the dead? As far as we know, rumor sites included if I'm not mistaken, D.L. is done on the show. As is Linderman. If Linderman gets a "Final Appearance" so does D.L. Heck D.L. is "more" gone than Linderman, we've seen his grave. Linderman might have been saved by members of the company and brought back, D.L. is in the ground. Padillah 12:07, 18 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

With an upcoming episode entitled "Four Months Ago", I don't think it's unreasonable to expect DL to make a guest appearance - or, at the very least, for his death to be explained. Remember, he died two months after the finale of season 1, according to his tombstone - so, something interesting must have happened. For that matter, with a character who travels through time, anything is possible. ZZ Claims ~ Evidence 17:49, 19 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
With that outlook we'd have to leave everyone's "Final Appearance" blank all the time. It's possible for anyone to come back at any time under several different circumstances. That's exactly my argument: Is this article based on what could happen? Or what did happen? We can only be encyclopeadic about what did happen. Padillah 05:23, 21 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I agree that nobody should have "Final Appearance" until the show is over. Having an episode listed as their final would be speculation.Ophois 05:12, 22 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
So do we stop listing any health benefits or scientific breakthroughs because they may turn out to be caused by something else in the future? We can only be as good as the information we are given. With the line of reasoning you are presenting we could never assert anything for fear of it being overturned by future enhancements or discovery. I don't believe that anyone would hold it against Wikipedia for positing that the last time a character appears was their final appearance, and then edit the entry later when new information is uncovered. Besides, leaving it blank gives the impression that the character is active and that is worse. Padillah 12:34, 22 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
(EC) I have no problem with listing Exploding Man as his final appearance. The main point I wanted to make is that it might not actually be his final appearance. This being a wiki, that's easily fixed. ZZ Claims ~ Evidence 12:40, 22 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
You know, we could just change the infobox from "Final Appearance" to "Last Appearance". Final means that none follow, but Last can mean that none follow or that it is the most recent. Sort of hedging bets. Active characters would remain as is, without the field entered. ZZ Claims ~ Evidence 12:42, 22 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I'm not a stickler for semantics. I've often wondered why it doesn't say that anyway, most "Who's Who" comics list the "Last Appearance" in deference to their ability to bring someone back to life whenever they want. I just don't think leaving it blank and hoping someone remembers (or cares) to fill it in eight or ten years from now, is a realistic outlook. It also calls into question other entries in the pantheon, Isaac, Simone, or even Linderman for example. As of this writing they all have a "Final Appearance". Linderman especially has every opportunity (even more if you consider the resources of The Company vs. the resources of D. L.) to return, that doesn't mean we hold him in limbo until every possibility has worked itself out. Are we to hold out for reunion shows as well? This could get ridiculous.
Given the premise of the show anything is possible at any given time. I argue that we shouldn't let the possibilities of the future stymie our coverage of the present. Padillah 13:34, 22 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Family section

[edit]

Is there a certain reason why there is a section for his family? It should probably just be in his info box, like for Monica Dawson.Ophois 05:36, 26 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Categories

[edit]

Again, I have to put forward that being Black is not central to the character or plot surrounding the character. He is not portraying a Black guy, he is a Black guy, portraying a person that can phase through solid matter. That he is Black (or African-American, though I don't think he's from Africa) is not something he's portraying, he really is Black. (see Talk:Haitian (Heroes) or Talk:Mohinder Suresh for more) Padillah (talk) 14:02, 21 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I agree--Chrisisinchrist (talk) 21:19, 12 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Ironic

[edit]

Am I the only one who finds it ironic that a man with phasing powers (ie, the ability to have things pass through you or to pass through things) gets injured and apparently killed by solid, impaling objects (objects he could have phased through?)63.239.69.1 (talk) 20:23, 1 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, I suppose it is rather ironic. All the same, please remember that, according to WP:NOT, Wikipedia talk pages "exist for the purpose of discussing how to improve articles; they are not mere general discussion pages about the subject of the article." There are other places where you can discuss this, but please don't do it here. Grey Maiden talk 20:45, 1 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Alternate Future

[edit]

Should we assume D.L. was the person Sylar killed to obtain the power of phasing, in the alternate future. It's possible Sylar obtained the power from somewhere else. After all both Nathan Petrelli & West Rosen can fly, Takezo Kensei & Claire Bennet can both regenerate, so who knows who Sylar killed in the alternate future. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 121.223.68.48 (talk) 08:22, 12 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Do we still need the Alternate Future section?

[edit]

Especially on a character that has been killed and has no reasonable expectation of reappearing. I'd like to get rid of the alternate future sections. They are outdated and invalid since Peter stopped that version of the future from happening. Yes, I understand there are references to the future in the new season but to keep the information on the off chance that it will be related to something that might come up is the embodiment of WP:CRYSTAL. We need to purge these sections. padillaH (review me)(help me) 13:19, 19 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

delete?

[edit]

Is this article really needed? I mean I liked the show but this guy is hardly notable. So while an article like this is certainly good to put on the heroes specific wiki, I can't see why it needs to be on wikipedia. In fact, I would argue that only 3 or 4 of the characters that currently do have their own articles truly deserves to have one. 202.53.199.23 (talk) 05:05, 13 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]
