"Cullen is a surname of Irish origin which is also found commonly in Scotland. It is thought to be derived from the pre 8th century Old Gaelic name O' Cuileannain, with the prefix O' indicating a male descendant of, plus the personal byname Cuilleannain.[citation needed] The name seems to be related to Cullinane. While Cullen is encountered primarily in Dublin and southeast Ireland, Cullinan/Cullinane used almost exclusively in western Ireland on a North-South-Axis from Galway to Cork.[1] A distribution map of the name has been processed on a genealogy site.[2]
I think this text should be changed because it only gives information about the Gaelic Cullen clan and does not give any information about the Norman clan of Cullen. The text does not give the full picture of the origin of both the Gaelic or Norman families of the surname Cullen. I think it is not good enough. - Not done: it's not clear what changes you want made. Please mention the specific changes in a "change X to Y" format. — {{U|Technical 13}} (t • e • c) 23:30, 27 February 2014 (UTC)
While Cullen is an often-found Irish surname, the English "Cullen baronets" and similar were Norman, so it can't be seen as Irish only. Both probably originated from very different words.78.16.70.89 (talk) 07:48, 14 August 2019 (UTC)
Split tag
[edit]Someone tagged this for split but no discussion, so I'll start one.
- Support splitting out Cullenite--Kintetsubuffalo (talk) 03:03, 24 June 2018 (UTC)
- If that's what the "split" tag is referring to, then yes I'd support that. I note, however, that it was originally a separate article before it was merged here, so we need to be sure of consensus to reverse that. --Deskford (talk) 22:54, 6 October 2018 (UTC)
- Er, it seems like the split tag was added in this 2017 edit by Kintetsubuffalo, which would in turn be a revert of this 2014 pair of edits [1][2] by Malcolma which was in turn a merge of a 2014 stub created by Drmies. While the etymology of Cullenite is clearly related to the specific surname, it doesn't seem like anthroponymy is its defining characteristic so I'd revert the merge as well. --Joy [shallot] (talk) 12:01, 23 June 2022 (UTC)
