Apostrophe and page move proposal
[edit]I'm sitting on Coasters Harbor Island right now. I've seen a very official-looking sign near the entrance to the Naval War College that has no apostrophe ("Coasters"). I've seen multiple official nautical charts (and they really vet the names on these charts carefully; see the Aquidneck Island article) that use "Coasters Harbor Island," again with no apostrophe. I've seen this Wikipedia article (with no discussion about or reference for the name itself, as far as verifying its typography) and an unofficial local guide that use "Coaster's Harbor Island" with an apostrophe.
I propose a page move to "Coasters Harbor Island" based on the above, but only after a good amount of time for discussion. Holy (talk) 21:38, 24 April 2013 (UTC)

Coaster's Harbor Island → Coasters Harbor Island – Here is the formal page move request. See my explanation above, to which there has been no reply in over a month. Holy (talk) 17:47, 3 June 2013 (UTC)
- Comment Coasters' Harbor Island should redirect here, whatever happens -- 70.24.245.196 (talk) 20:47, 3 June 2013 (UTC)
- Weak oppose: The U.S. government seems to have a policy against allowing apostrophes in official names. See the WSJ article published a couple of weeks ago on the topic. The question is whether the WP:COMMONNAME would ordinarily be considered to use possessive form or not. The WP:OFFICIALNAME that appears on government-produced maps and signs is not the most important or most familiar, although clearly one name should redirect to the other. —BarrelProof (talk) 01:03, 4 June 2013 (UTC)
- Support. BarrelProof's oppose is logical, but we should generally assume the official name is the common name until we have some RS's telling us differently. Red Slash 06:27, 5 June 2013 (UTC)
- Weak support I really don't like that policy, but we seem to abide by it (see Pikes Peak and Harpers Ferry). It's not just us, either. Look up this island on Google Maps. You'll find it if you include the apostrophe, but you won't find the apostrophe on the map. --BDD (talk) 22:04, 14 June 2013 (UTC)
