Other Names

[edit]

I have never heard of CYF referred to as "Li Gong". I'm removing this and someone can put it back if it is sourced. Sockbot 05:23, 28 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I don't know where you saw that, but Li Gong (aka Gong Li) is the name of a Chinese actress, his co-star in Curse of the Golden Flower. So maybe you misread it. 24.6.99.30 19:57, 5 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

War at Red Cliffs

[edit]

It's official! Chow Yun-Fat will be playing Liu Bei! Now, someone find a reliable source before we post it in his filmography. :-)

According to Bey Logan on the Hard Boiled DVD, he dropped out of it. I don't know when that commentary was made however, so take that as you will. Raven6248 19:17, 24 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Image

[edit]

Change the Curse of the Golden Flower (2006) image, someone. Why don't Wiki editors realise the whole point of placing an image on a page is to SHOW PEOPLE WHO THE PAGE DISCUSSES. What's the idea of using a picture of someone in several layers of disguise? Mr.bonus 20:43, 20 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Agreed. It's a terrible picture. Bombot 09:52, 31 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Not only that, but it also dominates the page to the extent of making it hard to read.129.22.163.194 00:44, 6 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Do we have an image of him not in the movies? What's the point of putting his image up of him playing in The pirates of Caribbean when he has hair and doesn't have moustache naturally? OhanaUnitedTalk page 07:19, 6 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Censored in Pirates of the Carribean

[edit]

I have heard that Chow had said two against beijing officials publicly in the past. First is that he gave Tung Chee Hwa hard times when he voiced against his poor management of the HK tourism industry since the 1997 handover. The other is that he voiced against certain sports gambling in HK since the 1997 handover. Supposedly prior to 97, UK kept HK pretty clean. I don't know the whole detail on this one. While I cannot find the exact sources to tie, this censorship maybe more than what it seems. Possibly mainland officials are flexing their censorship muscle to mess with him. Spelling

[edit]

I have also seen his name as "Chou Yun Fat" -- is there any way to mention that so that searches will pick it up? Or does it have to be by disambiguation page? Monado (talk) 07:29, 10 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

There's already a re-direct from Chou Yun-Fat to here and I don't really see a need to add mention of it in the article.Xyex (talk) 07:46, 19 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Roshi in Dragonball

[edit]

Chow's signed on to play Roshi in the live action Dragonball movie, according to The Hollywood Reporter.Xyex (talk) 07:50, 19 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Book

[edit]

Yun-Fat on June 26, 2008 released in Hong Kong, his first photo collection, which included pictures taken on his movies sets. Proceeds from sales of the book will be donated to Sichuan earthquake victims. Published by Louis Vuitton, the book will be sold in Vuitton's Hong Kong and Paris stores.gmanews.tv, 'Crouching Tiger' actor launches book for benefit of Chinese earthquake victimspr-inside.com, 'Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon' star Chow Yun-fat publishes photo collection--Florentino floro (talk) 12:26, 26 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hakka?

[edit]

I would like a source that confirms that Chow is indeed Hakka. I had always believed he was Cantonese... Lady Galaxy 19:32, 24 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I recommend reading the Hakka page, which explains this. Hakka are an ethnic group. Canton is a province; the people who live there are Cantonese, regardless of ethnicity. It's like arguing if he's black or a Texan. Neither Hakka nor Cantonese excludes the other. 71.171.89.90 (talk) 18:39, 21 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Trivia

[edit]

I know it's discouraged...

Chow Yun-Fat is referenced in the video game "Max Payne". ("Gognitti bailed. I made like Chow Yun-Fat".) —Preceding unsigned comment added by 79.180.246.254 (talk) 00:28, 8 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Marriage

[edit]

I would believe that his current wife is named Jasmine Chow ( whom he married in 1987 ) as opposed to Jasmine Tan. She is a Singapore Citizen. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Janjan52 (talkcontribs) 13:01, 16 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Asian American Leading Actor

[edit]

Perhaps should remove the phrase about the asian american leading actor vs. caucasian chinese leading actor part. It appears to be quite out of place here. First Bruce Lee made his debut and success in American as far back as in the 60s. Also the comparison is quite meaningless in nature. Just like saying the US is not prepared for an African American president because Kenya cant have a Caucasian as theirs. America is a land for immigrants not for xenophobic stereotypes. Phasmaserica (talk) 14:48, 27 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not sure what you are getting at. But I agree that the paragraph should be removed. My problem is the sweeping generlisation that america has not accepted an asian actor in a leading role. Not only is this wrong (jackie chan, bruce lee etc), it is completely off-topic. Mr Chow has just been unlucky, only starring in films that have not been successful. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 92.22.111.198 (talk) 02:17, 2 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Can you think of an Asian crossover star who does not do martial arts?
I think this is true, but still beside the point. This article is not the place to be editorializing on cultural stereotypes in American films.

POV tag

[edit]

As there is no reason given for the tag, it will be removed. 124.187.102.212 (talk) 02:58, 8 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Odd Interpretation

[edit]

Unable to play down the Asian stereotype, Chow took advantage of it by accepting the role of Li Mu-Bai in the (2000) film Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. How, exactly, is appearing in a multi-nationally-produced wuxia film giving in to a stereotype of Asians as martial artists? Atypicaloracle (talk) 17:12, 4 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

He is best known in Asia for his collaborations with filmmaker John Woo in the heroic bloodshed genre films A Better Tomorrow, The Killer and Hard Boiled;

Is it absolutely necessary to slip in the link to the "Heroic bloodshed" article, which is one film critic's terminology? NotYourFathersOldsmobile (talk) 02:36, 3 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
