Revisions

[edit]

I edited several parts of the article. I removed a reference to the Puerto Rican independence leader Betances. To say that Betances was one of Wurtz's students is to imply that Betances was an important chemist, for no other students of Wurtz are mentioned in the article (and indeed Wurtz had several students who became very prominent chemists). Yes, Betances heard Wurtz's lectures, but he took Wurtz's chemistry course only because he needed it for his medical degree. It is therefore not very relevant to this brief article, and is in fact misleading. I also removed a statement that Wurtz was of German extraction. Again, this is true, but misleading, for it implies that some of Wurtz's near forebears were German, and they were not. It is true in the sense that all native Alsatians have German forebears, if you go back far enough. So I added a couple of sentences on this matter in the Life section.
