Segregation academy?

[edit]

Was CHC repurposed in 1971 as a segregation academy? It seems like the right time frame, and I came across a tantalizing hint in a 1992 article from the Virginian-Pilot here where the Portsmouth School Superintendent Richard Trumble had cooked up some kind of private school choice program with then CHC headmaster Daniel Richardson. They gave up on the program in the face of public opposition and lack of funding, and Trumble was quoted in the paper thus:

Trumble told the PTA Council that as "outsiders" from Northern states, he and Richardson underestimated the deep-seated resentment against private academies, many of which flourished when whites sought to flee newly integrated public schools.

Was he speaking in general about the feeling of people from the school district about private schools, or is this a reference to something in the past of the CHC? I'm working with a few newspaper articles to put in a paragraph or two about Richardson and this plan, but was wondering if anyone had sources that could explain the reason for refounding the school in 1971.— alf laylah wa laylah (talk) 00:52, 1 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

The Everett school connection

[edit]

Does anyone have information on the status of the Everett School in 1971 when it was bought by the Peregoffs? If it was a functioning concern, why did they feel the need to buy it in order to meet the need for "an academically based private school"? Wouldn't the Everett School already have been meeting this need? If it wasn't functioning when the Peregoffs bought it, why does the school website make it seem like there's continuity between the institutions?— alf laylah wa laylah (talk) 03:50, 1 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
