Announcement concerning slang glossary policy discussion

[edit]

As you are probably aware, there are many slang glossaries on Wikipedia with widespread acceptance, yet virtually all of them , either of these solutions would save a lot of time and effort wasted on fruitless AfDs. You are welcome to join the discussion. --List Expert 10:00, 4 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I see no reason to delete this article; truck drivers (I'm one myself) have a culture and language all their own, and this article serves to help understand it.--Lpimlott (talk) 04:38, 1 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I added notability dispute to this article. This article is better suited for Wiktionary not wikipedia. Wikipedia:Wikipedia_is_not_a_dictionary --Ssavilam (talk) 04:38, 17 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Origin Year?

[edit]

It says in the article "which developed ... during the 1980s.".

It seems to me that this would be better as "1970s". As the article on Citizens' band radio says, the highpoint of CB was in the early 70's, and there were several movies using this slang in that period, eg Convoy and Smokey and the Bandit.

Any objections?

Bears!

[edit]

Is 'but its frequent reference to bears gives it a fairytale quality' intentionally or unintentionally hilarious? Cranky1000 (talk) —Preceding undated comment added 17:22, 23 April 2010 (UTC).[reply]

It's probably unintentional, but it's definitely ignorant. It gone, bye-bye. ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots01:43, 16 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Cleanup

[edit]

Could someone please edit this article? many things on the list are repeated. thank you. 71.80.46.96 (talk) 06:24, 17 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Trying to save space here causes problems:
Alpha / Beta / Gamma – the meaning of the three synonymes.
There are easily duplicates of this at A, B and G. Should this be made:
Alpha – the meaning of the three synonymes. (See also Beta, Gamma)
Beta – see Alpha
Gamma – see Alpha

Original research tag

[edit]

This list is largely referenced, and I suspect a number of entries are locally used or simply made up. The references that are in place are largely low quality as well. Lots or work is needed to make sure the list is well referenced to reliable sources. --TeaDrinker (talk) 20:53, 10 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Re:Place names I can't give a reference other than my memory, but I've heard these, in the NY/NJ area, countless times in the 1970s. The Lincoln Tunnel was referred to as "That hole in the wall". The Nabisco plant in Fair Lawn, NJ was "the cookie factory". — Preceding unsigned comment added by 68.197.69.113 (talk) 22:02, 24 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Beaver

[edit]

Pretty commonly used, I don't see it anywhere. Someone want to add it? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 167.230.96.11 (talk) 18:26, 23 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Waco

[edit]

Undid revision 894867182 by 161.109.158.205 (talk) added three terms related to Waco, Texas. None of them are CB slang; one is general-purpose slang, while the others are local Waco slang. Also, two of them are in the wrong sections, and two of them are spelled wrong. I've removed all three. --157.131.246.136 (talk) 10:43, 12 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Convict Wagon

[edit]

This is a white/ other colored vehicle that has Dept. Of Corrections and/ or police insignias on it used to transport prisoners to jail or prison. An example is :"Got a convict Wagon on mile marker 10 full of Beavers in it". That means that the trucker had seen female prisoners in a Corrections vehicle. 216.247.72.142 (talk) 05:05, 1 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Citations appreciated

[edit]

Just did some copyediting on this article, would appreciate if someone could work on adding citations for many of these phrases. There are some slang dictionaries that could be cited and which may have more slang to add. 140.177.181.180 (talk) 17:32, 23 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
