[edit]How does one change this article name back to Cúil Aodha? I'm here looking for information about Iarla Ó Lionáird, by far the most famous person from Cúil Aodha. I have never, ever heard of him as coming from a place named "Coolea" but for some bizarre reason I cannot move this town's name to its correct name. - Checked Google, Google Books and a couple of media websites from Ireland, and the official Irish Cúil Aodha did seem more common (although not vastly more) so I went ahead with the move. Tameamseo (talk) 18:20, 28 September 2010 (UTC)

[edit]I don't believe the Irish name Cúil Aodha is "far more common" than the English name Coolea, at least not on a national level. However, since I lived in Dublin and not Cork, my exposure to the English version probably causes a bias. I asked a few of my mates from back in Ireland to see what they said, and they also thought Coolea was more common. But again, the fact that they're from Dublin would affect my results!
So I've compared their usage online:

I would have liked to include more national newspapers in my search but this wasn't possible due to their search functionality not working on my laptop for whatever reason, or because they simply had no results for the village, other than articles about Coolea cheese. A few searches on international websites only yielded results on Coolea cheese!
I realise that in the village itself the Irish name is probably used, since it's in the Gaeltacht. But the naming guideline says: "If no name can be shown to be widely accepted in English, use the local name." I would consider Coolea to be widely accepted in English (otherwise the table above would have fewer results for the name in English), therefore there is no need to use the local name. But hey, I don't have a horse in this race, so let it be whatever it must be. ;-) Missimack (talk) 21:59, 14 February 2016 (UTC)
