[edit]You could probably add in the most famous players section, names such as LAurent Pokou: the African Cup highest scorer of all time in Asmara ethiopia, Yousouf Falikou FOfana the Black Diamond of Monaco and Abdoulaye Traore who has been named one of the most outstanding forwards in the world several times in the 1990s . IVORIAN supporter from MALTA
[edit]-We are sending this message from OUR LADY OF SORROWS church in ST Pauls Bay. We are a group of supporters of Ivory Coast because we think negros are good in football and also they are strong. We are going to watch all the games of IVORY COAST with great passion and enthusiasm. We think that Ivory coast are the best team of Germany 2006 Well we wish them good luck and as we Maltese say VIVA L-IVORY COAST COME ON ELEPHANTS !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! — Preceding unsigned comment added by 194.204.106.24 (talk • contribs) 10:50, 12 June 2006
Football for peace?
[edit]- As it was well publisized that fighting in the Ivory Coast civil war was suspended so that the warring factions could watch the Elephants' games in the 2006 World Cup, I think something about that should be included in the article. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Nygoodliving (talk • contribs) 15:57, 18 June 2006
Fair use rationale for Image:Cote dIvoire FA.gif
[edit]Image:Cote dIvoire FA.gif is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in Wikipedia articles constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.
Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.
If there is other other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images uploaded after 4 May, 2006, and lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.BetacommandBot 21:23, 2 June 2007 (UTC)

Côte d'Ivoire
[edit]Given that this is English wikipedia, why is this not Ivory Coast? Thin end and wedge anyone? danno 21:03, 16 May 2010 (UTC)
The official English name of Côte d'Ivoire actually is Côte d'Ivoire. See: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/C%C3%B4te_d%27Ivoire#Name_of_the_countrySchoenheit von Vogelsang (talk) 09:19, 13 June 2010 (UTC)
The CIV national team, according to [page], was known as "Ivory Coast" before 1983. Perhaps references to the pre-1983 team should be changed accordingly? 94.11.52.92 (talk) 16:38, 30 June 2010 (UTC)
The name of this page should not be "Ivory Coast". Cote d'Ivoire is the official name of the country in English, even though it is a French spelling. Costa Rica is another example - that is the English name, even though it is spelled in Spanish. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 198.190.28.153 (talk) 21:51, 11 February 2015 (UTC)
Bakari Kone
[edit]I think there's a mistake in this article - Bakari Kone (Marseille striker) aka Baky was called up to the squad, not Arouna Kone (Seville). I was at the press conference so I should know! —Preceding unsigned comment added by 41.202.71.55 (talk) 16:29, 17 May 2010 (UTC)
To note that there is a request for comment on whether Wikipedia should be giving primacy to the phrase of Côte d'Ivoire or Ivory Coast. Those who would like to express their opinion and participate in the discussion should do at that talk page. billinghurst sDrewth 08:30, 12 July 2010 (UTC)
most competitive group in WC 2010?
[edit]This statement is highly arguable. None of the teams in the group made it past the quarter-finals...
"Then again, in the 2010 World Cup of South Africa, Côte d'Ivoire was drawn in another group of death. The group consisted of the always favorite Brasil, the explosive Portugal, and the seemingly weak North Korea. Côte d'Ivoire placed 3rd in Group G. Nevertheless, Côte d'Ivoire, for the past two World Cup, has been drawn in the most competitive groups". —Preceding unsigned comment added by 194.30.84.125 (talk) 10:57, 27 July 2010 (UTC)
"accusations of FIFA racism"
[edit]I deleted the nonsense that FIFA were accussed of racism because they put CIV into difficult groups for the last two world cups. It was a draw done at random. And there was no link or reference to any article anywhere that suggested FIFA racism. — Preceding unsigned comment added by DrSWP241 (talk • contribs) 11:35, 1 April 2011 (UTC)

[edit]- The following discussion is an archived discussion of a requested move. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section on the talk page. Editors desiring to contest the closing decision should consider a move review. No further edits should be made to this section.
The result of the move request was: Move. While it's not unanimous, the apparent consensus here is that "Ivory Coast" is the common name for the football team. Jafeluv (talk) 10:33, 30 April 2013 (UTC)

– These titles should probably only be out of line with Ivory Coast if there's a good reason to do so. Presumably the reason that these pages have lagged behind Ivory Coast is that FIFA lists the country as Côte d'Ivoire. But we should follow our own standards, not FIFAs, as we do at North Korea national football team (not Korea DPR) and South Korea national football team (not Republic of Korea). We've also done this with Ligue 1 (Ivory Coast). So as long as we have Ivory Coast, let's follow WP:COMMONNAME and bring these articles in line. Note that most relevant category names already use Ivory Coast. If this request is successful, I'll see to the C2D speedy renaming of the outlier. BDD (talk) 18:15, 22 April 2013 (UTC)

- Support for consistency with the main Ivory Coast article. Number 57 21:34, 22 April 2013 (UTC)
- Oppose: Let's follow WP:COMMONNAME for opposing by using the common name used in the media for the team and the official name of the team as described by FIFA.--LauraHale (talk) 22:44, 22 April 2013 (UTC)
- Could you explain how "Côte d'Ivoire" is the common name for the football team? In almost every media outlet I've looked at (Sky, BBC, Eurosport, the Guardian, the Telegraph CNN, Al Jazeera), Ivory Coast is used. Number 57 08:44, 23 April 2013 (UTC)
- Oppose. "Côte d'Ivoire" is still the common name used by various sports media and other reliable sources that cover the football teams, roughly similar to how "Chinese Taipei" is the common name used by various sports media and other reliable sources that cover various teams from Taiwan. The common name of sports teams do not necessarily match the common name of the associated nation. (Incidentally, the naming of Ligue 1 (Ivory Coast) was a totally different matter because we were disambiguating sports leagues named "Ligue 1", using the common name of the country as the disambiguating phrase in parentheses). Zzyzx11 (talk) 01:56, 23 April 2013 (UTC)
- As above, I'm not sure it is the common name used by sports media. Number 57 08:44, 23 April 2013 (UTC)
- Oppose:: Fifa and CAF use Cote d'Ivoire and not Ivory Coast. Stigni (talk) 10:48, 23 April 2013 (UTC)
- Official names are irrelevant. As pointed out by the nominator, FIFA also use Korea Republic and Korea DPR for South Korea and North Korea, yet we do not name the articles in this way because they are not the common names. Number 57 11:27, 23 April 2013 (UTC)
- Support; I was set to oppose due to FIFA and CAF usage, but Number 57's media evidence is conclusive IMO. WP:COMMONNAME applies. Powers T 14:02, 23 April 2013 (UTC)
- Support per No. 57's media links. Green Giant (talk) 19:32, 23 April 2013 (UTC)
- Support per WP:UCN, naturally. Red Slash 23:20, 23 April 2013 (UTC)
- Support per Number57's links that show that the proposed name is the most common name used in English sources. Mentoz86 (talk) 12:56, 26 April 2013 (UTC)
- Support. The links provided Number 57 are convincing. We must consider the possibility that the country's sports team is called by a different name than the common name of the country itself. But that would be unusual and does not seem to be the case here. Kauffner (talk) 14:07, 26 April 2013 (UTC)
- Support - evidence above demonstrates common name as "Ivory Coast X" and not the French equivalent. C679 21:51, 28 April 2013 (UTC)
- Support - clear case of WP:COMMONNAME here. GiantSnowman 08:36, 29 April 2013 (UTC)

Name issue again
[edit]This is quite ridiculous... sate names can't be translated into English, otherwise many other states (as well) could appear as follows:
- Costa Rica- Rich coast.
- Cape Verde- Green Cape.
- Algeria (Arabic: al-Djazayer)- The Islands.
- Morocco (Arabic: al-Maghreb)- The West.
- United Arab Emirates- United Arab Principalities.
- Bahrain- The Two Seas.
- Puerto Rico- Rich Port.
- Ecuador- The Equator.
- Venezuela- Small Venezia.
