Interfaith section was removed by anon

[edit]

An anon went and cut this out without explanation. I tried to make this balanced, noting that there was no tensions/problems with community interaction, but made a note of a high-profile complaint about Buddhism from an archbishop, which was sourced. Does anybody disagree if I reinstate it?Blnguyen | Have your say!!! - review me 08:04, 22 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Ethnic/cultural breakdown

[edit]

A demographic profile of Australian Buddhists might be helpful to understand the community. All I've got is anecdotal 'evidence' that most Buddhist are of Chinese and Vietnamese heritage. Htra0497 19:50 1st September 2006 (AET)

"2914.0.55.002 2006 Census Ethnic Media Package" (Excel download). Census Dictionary, 2006 (cat.no 2901.0). Australian Bureau of Statistics. 2007-06-27. Retrieved 2008-07-14. is somewhat useful as a source for these sort of statistics. Of people born in China (not including HK, Macau or Taiwan) 36,278 or 17.6% are Buddhist. Surprisingly that sheet doesn't include stats on Vietnamese. None of the other countries have very large figures to account for the size of the population declaring Buddhism as their religion. These stats do not include 2nd or later generations. --Matilda talk 21:05, 14 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Another more useful source is "3416.0 - Perspectives on Migrants, 2007: Birthplace and Religion". Australian Bureau of Statistics. 2008-02-25. Retrieved 2008-07-15. which I used to add perspectives on Islam in Australia at Islam in Australia#Population Statistics. That source supports that 59% of Australian residents born in Vietnam declare Buddhism as their religion and this compares with only 9% of Vietnamese in Vietnam declaring Buddhism. The Chinese proportion is similar in China and Australia at 17-18%. For people born in Malaysia 26% of Australian residents declare they are Buddhist compared with 19% in Malaysia. I will add info from this source to the article when I get a chance. --Matilda talk 21:13, 14 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
