Cultural references

[edit]

As I recently brought up at the wikiproject (here) it is time we did something about the cultural references sections. I am moving all unsourced references to the talk pages for the time being in hopes of creating a better, more thoroughly sourced article. Please discuss this action at the wikiproject link above so as not to split it over 72 different talk pages. The information removed from the article follows. * The game Fry and Bender play at the beginning of the episode is a parody of Dejarik, the game played by R2-D2 and Chewbacca in Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope. Update - Added source for this item, returned to article. Stardust8212 12:25, 19 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

  • D.O.O.P. is explicitly compared to the United Federation of Planets from the Star Trek Universe. Also, the "neutral zone" in which its headquarters are located may be a reference to the neutral zone between the Romulans and the Federation, or more likely to politically neutral countries such as Switzerland.
  • When the Planet Express Ship comes into the new station, a riff on the theme of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine can be heard.
  • The laser Zapp uses to cut the ribbon has settings of "Stun", "Kill" and "Hyperdeath™", a reference to phasers from the Star Trek universe.
  • The slogan on the neutral planet "Live Free or Don't" is a paraphrase of New Hampshire's state motto "Live Free or Die".
  • The woman in the car who wants Kif Kroker is Hattie McDoogal, Fry and Bender's landlady from "I, Roommate" in season 1.
  • The crew's mission to the high gravity planet is a parody of the book Mission of Gravity.

Good 'ol high gravity rain

[edit]

I was just watching this episode again and I got to thinking wouldn't a place with high gravity have smaller rain drops that wouldn't hit as hard? Zeos386sx (talk) 20:49, 8 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Discontinuation?

[edit]

Okay, I am not sure if I used the right word there, but, at the begining of the episode, Hermes compares DOOP to the Federation of Star treck. However, because of the events of Where NO Fan Has Gone Before, is this possible? The Dark Fiddler (talk) 01:53, 22 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I think that it's possible, because he didn't say it while in the presence of the general public. As there was no way for the police to have been alerted of this, no reactions of the same scale of Where NO Fan Has Gone Before would occur (whereas when Fry said Star Trek in Where NO Fan Has Gone Before, an alarm immediately went off, prompting the arrival of the police)

Comma in title

[edit]

Just a notice. But the comma is included in its title, that is, "Brannigan, Begin Again". For prove, consult the US copyright catalogue: http://cocatalog.loc.gov/, search for "brannigan begin", the only two results include the comma. In addition, this is also a good website for checking on spelling of episodes. --Svippong 21:29, 19 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

A more direct link. --Svippong 21:31, 19 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Chess

[edit]

Wasn't it C 3 P O, not R2-D2 that played chess with Chewbacca? R2-D2 can't talk. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.201.8.250 (talk) 23:24, 9 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
