Responsibility for the bombardment

[edit]

I've rewritten the article Bombardment of Đà Nẵng to remove a certain amount of repetition and to go further into the background and significance of the incident. I'm trying to find out more about why the negotiations failed and the circumstances in which the battle started. The suggestion that the French opened fire first is also intriguing, and I'm certainly open-minded about this. For the time being, though I prefer to rely on Thomazi, old though he is, than the history of Vietnam by Chapuis quoted in a previous revision, which seems unreasonably biased against the French. For the time being, I'd prefer not to use this source until I've looked further into the incident. If necessary, I will reinstate it.

Dubious

[edit]

Was the name of the city really Tourane before the French took over? DHN (talk) 09:39, 18 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Dear DHN

Good point. Probably not. Perhaps I should simply say 'Da Nang (known to the French as Tourane)' until I find out where the name Tourane came from.

How come this article exclusively uses an 80-yo book by a French officer as fact, when many modern books by professors completely disagree with it. It is introducing colonial POV all over the place. YellowMonkey (bananabucket!) 05:33, 23 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Because I tidied up and expanded this article at the request of another contributor, and Thomazi was the only source I had available. If you have better sources, use them. But don't use 'modern books by professors' simply because they're anti-French, or I shall be complaining in my turn about an anti-colonial POV.

Well unless the first ten books fished out by Google books, or McLeod, is incorrect, then it seems Colonel Thomazi is a bit outnumbered YellowMonkey (vote in the Southern Stars and White Ferns supermodel photo poll) 08:13, 23 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Fine. If they provide further reliable information, let's have them. As I said, I only got involved in this article because somebody else asked me to tidy it up and improve the English, and I put in some more material from the sources I happened to have to hand. If you can expand this article and contrast Vietnamese with French sources, great.
