"Ocean is blue"?
[edit]Stated in article: "This is the main reason why the ocean is blue." I partially dispute this. jimswen (talk) 10:39, 7 August 2024 (UTC)
- I can think of 3 situations where it shows bluish color. (1) looking down on ocean water surface on a sunlit day. (2) turquoise shallow water, when the bottom is light-colored sand. (3) scuba diving 100+ feet deep on a sunlit day, the ambient colors are dimmer and bluer than they would be near the surface. jimswen (talk) 10:45, 7 August 2024 (UTC)
- (2) and (3) are due to overtone absorbtion, as described in the article. But (1) is not. It is mainly due to reflection of blue skylight by the water surface. And (1) is the color experience that most people associate with the ocean. jimswen (talk) 10:49, 7 August 2024 (UTC)
