Early comments
[edit]It is actually the Karl Bremer Hospital, NOT Bremmer. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 168.209.97.34 (talk • contribs)
- Yeah, and who the hell said it was in Cape Town??? It's like waaaay out of Cape Town. --Scotteh 15:31, 16 August 2006 (UTC)
- Well, it depends if you mean "Cape Town" as in the center of the city, or "Cape Town" as in the metropolitan area. Bellville is definitely part of Greater Cape Town. - htonl 00:34, 17 November 2006 (UTC)
Strand
[edit]Strand's name hasn't been "The Strand" for over a hundred years now. Please. It's just "Strand". Fixed it. --Scotteh 15:46, 27 August 2006 (UTC)
Bellville is a city
[edit]Bellville is a city. Everyone knows that. It achieved official city status in the late 1970s. But Wikipedia wants to have a reference for that, oh no. So I got a reference... from a golfing estate's web site. But golfing is regarded with distain in [[User:Htonl:Htonl]'s culture, so he doesn't accept that that a trustworthy reference. Just do a search for http://www.google.com/search?q=%22city+of+bellville%22+site%3A.za -- which of these links are sufficiently trustworthy for you, then? -- leuce (talk) 10:23, 26 February 2009 (UTC)
- I don't have any problem with golf; I just don't think that a golf website is a reliable source for determining whether Bellville is a city. I'd actually accept the first result of your search - the one from the city council - as a reliable source. You might note that I've now added that as a reference.
- I do, though, wonder if the ex-municipality being titled "City of" necessarily makes the place a city. After all, Port Elizabeth is definitely a city, but there's no "City" in "Nelson Mandela Metropolitan Municipality". If you asked the average South African, would they really describe Bellville as a city? In my (entirely anecdotal) experience, if you asked someone to list the cities of South Africa, they would list Jo'burg, Cape Town, Durban, Pretoria, PE, Bloem, East London and Pietermaritzburg. (Some might include Nelspruit, Polokwane and/or Mafikeng.) I doubt they would mention Bellville.
- Oh, and "golfing is regarded with distain in Htonl's culture"? What? Do I have an 'I hate golf' userbox on my page or something? - htonl (talk) 11:38, 26 February 2009 (UTC)
- "Bellville is a former city" is a particularly strange and awkward introduction - it makes it sound as though Bellville is some abandoned ruins. The term "city" is rather ambiguous and has several overlapping meanings and Bellville is only a former city by the local government definition. By one definition Cape Town, Bloemfontein, Johannesburg, Pretoria, Durban etc are one set of cities. But then large settlements that form part of an even larger urban area such as Germiston or Soweto are also often known as cities, and Bellville would fall under that definition. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 82.32.72.129 (talk) 20:56, 5 August 2010 (UTC)

Hardekraaltjie and Eversdal
[edit]These two famsteads place Bellville as a free burger out span in 1677. (Jan van riebeeck diary vol2., 1677). On a 1846 map of the area named Hardekraaltjie, the area is not just covered by the present day caravan park but stretches to Bellville South. No mention in the definition of Bellville to the 1720 settlers or the La Belle Alliance graveyard at Hardekraaltjie. Or any Bellville South references as Bellville South is the first forced removals of the group areas act 1956 as well as Oakdale(Land claims commission) Furthermore all those famous Bellville people excludes the famous Bolla Conradie world cup rugby player, Cedwyn Joel(Suidooster actor), Henry Deleeuw famous oil on canvas Painter, and Mike Botha( actor in local south African movies like Jantjie). That Bellville has 6 of its own stations including: Sarepta, Unibel, Pentech, Oostezee, Stikland, Bellville and that it is a major taxi and bus junction.
