[edit]Hello Wiki World! On behalf of myself and 5 other Wikipedia users, we are planning to edit this article as it has many instances of bias and unsupported claims. Along with the page citing no concrete sources, there is also no substantiated information about whitewashing in the beauty industry. Our group plans to add citations, subheadings, images, as well as a more well-rounded critique of whitewashing. Thank you! Hgray6 (talk) 19:15, 18 November 2016 (UTC)
- Hello Hgray6 and co! You seem to have been doing great work to improve this article recently! I think the whole article could benefit from being reorganized into regional/country sections (eg. United States, India, China, etc.) to stop it from becoming too unwieldy as it gets longer. What do you think? I will try to contribute more when I have time, but as your group seem to be doing considerable work I thought I would mention this idea here first. Best, Mineffle (talk) 04:03, 1 December 2016 (UTC)
This is the first time I have tried this. There seem to be many unspoken rules, but... this is this most outrageously bad Wikipedia article I have ever read. By bad I mean it violates Wikipedia policies and recommendations repeatedly. If I am not mistaken it still puts forth conjecture and even purely political opinions as fact. In my opinion, wikipedia would be better off if it deleted the article entirely. Wikipedia's reputation is somewhat at stake here. Better yet, find a person with a good reputation for impartiality and have them work the article over. 96.55.6.251 (talk) 08:37, 3 July 2020 (UTC)
- This article is incredibly biased and makes continual and unsubstantiated claims without any evidence for the conclusions drawn.
- ”White Washing” is an incredibly controversial and largely rejected idea within academic circles. At the very least, the distinction needs to be made that representation (how many white people are in a certain industry, advert etc) isn’t evidence that underrepresented groups are being discriminated against. There is no explanation of empirical evidence that someone’s skin colour is a determining factor in their success in the media as opposed to their wealth, age, attractiveness, family links to the industry etc. I am amazed this article is still up as it wouldn’t be a credible piece of work even at uk 16-18 level. 2A00:23C6:E80:9901:D39:9A5B:6C3D:80AE (talk) 17:45, 24 August 2022 (UTC)
I found a book, Whitewash: Racialized Politics and the Media by John Gabriel that provides a comprehensive view on the history and effect of whitewashing in media. Another book I'm interested in is Whitewashing Race: The Myth of a Color-Blind Society by Michael K. Brown. I'd like to go through these and potentially add some information from them to this page, since it seems to be lacking in information.Carolinesafran (talk) 02:02, 23 February 2018 (UTC)
