Draught OK?

[edit]

Is draught ok? (25 meters or 76 feet). Should it be 25 feet, 7.6 meters? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 91.156.123.107 (talk) 16:33, 29 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Catapult?

[edit]

The article states the carriers had "one aircraft lift, one aircraft catapult and nine arrestor wires" (the same info is on the three ship articles as well). So far as I know catapults weren’t installed on carriers until the 1950s, and there’s no sign of one on the image. Has this been added by someone, or is it in the sources provided (I don’t have access to either). Does anybody know? Xyl 54 (talk) 15:06, 2 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Per Aircraft catapult, steam catapults didn't come about until the 1950s, but hydraulic catapults had been used since the 30s. BilCat (talk) 19:28, 2 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Hobbs states they had an hydraulic catapult Lyndaship (talk) 19:42, 2 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@BilCat:, Lyndaship: Thanks for replying; I know catapults were used on other warships that carried aircraft, what I’m querying is whether they were fitted to carriers. I thought the relatively low take-off speeds of the aircraft of he time meant they could make rolling take-offs without using one, and it was only the advent of jets that made them necessary. The MAC carrier article doesn’t mention catapults, and the article there gives the parameters for safe operating as a length of 460 ft and a sped of 15 knots, which, it would seem, was then shaved down (see MV Empire MacAlpine) to 412 ft and 12 knots for the grain-carriers. The Avengers showed better than that. I'm not familiar with Hobbs; who is that? Xyl 54 (talk) 23:12, 3 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, most of the aircraft carriers had hydraulic catapults. BilCat (talk) 23:20, 3 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
