Page defaced/vandalized/whatever it's called
[edit]I know nothing about editing Wikipedia so I'm loathe to make a change to the article; I'm afraid I'll screw up something. However, I would like to point out that someone has changed the information table in the article to show the Engine Type as "hip hop potamus". I sorta doubt that Audi makes any engine that can be accurately described in that way. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 68.119.232.251 (talk) 11:26, 15 February 2009 (UTC)
Merge Discussion
[edit]oppose suggested Merge of Audi R8 and Audi Le Mans. Audi have yet to confirm that the sportscar will be called R8, and since it won't be in production for at least 2 more years, i think the page for the Le Mans concept car should remain intact, perhaps with any coming detials abotu the production car. Once the R8 name is confirmed, and production has started, or a lot more info is made available, then it would be appropraite to merge the pages, but not yet. Spute 17:41, 7 December 2005 (UTC)
agree Audi DID confirm that the name was R8. Series production will commence in the fourth quarter of 2006 at Audi’s Neckarsulm facility. Audi R8 is a go 83.157.228.37 12:43, 15 December 2005 (UTC)
I oppose merging the R8 Le Mans page with this one because they are 2 seperate cars, though one inspired the other. The R8 is much closer, if not totally, a stock car, and the Le Mans R8 certainly is not "stock". ~Kodey —Preceding unsigned comment added by Idiotninja (talk • contribs) 21:23, 2 March 2007 (UTC)
Background
[edit]- I removed this section because it had the statement 'whilst it is not mentioned so often' - which is very subjective. Every article I've read about the R8 references the Gallardo! I've incorporated most of what was said in this section into the Techincal Details section, although removed the speculative statement about the R8 being a testbed completely. Future Upgrades
[edit]I have a problem with this quote in the article under "Future Upgrades": "Audi is currently in the process of developing a new turbocharged 5.2 L V10 engine for the future Audi RS6, and there is a possibility that this engine will make its way into the R8, dependent on marketing decisions. Test mules of this vehicle are developing well in excess of 600 bhp with the turbocharged 5.2 L V10. If this were to happen it is almost certain that this would create an RS8." That Audi is developing a turbocharged 5.2 liter V10 for the upcoming RS6 (an unannounced vehicle) is pure speculation as far as I know, especially mentioning how much power the "test mules" are making. You'd need inside information to know these things. Enthusiast speculation on details when repeated many times over may start to sound true, and may even end up being true eventually, but that doesn't make them facts. Also, if this were to happen, the vehicle would not be called an "RS8" as an RS8 would technically be a very high performance version of the A8 slotted above the recent S8 (which many doubt Audi would ever build). —Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.236.228.126 (talk) 10:43, 30 January 2007 (UTC)
Please verify and include the information in the article that the R8 is being produced at the Audi plant at Neckarsulm, Germany. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 194.114.62.38 (talk) 11:43, 17 October 2007 (UTC)
US Pricing
[edit]While the press release states the price will be 104,400 Euro, this does not mean the US price will be 1.3 X 104,400.
For example, the Audi A8 4.2 FSI Quattro long body is 84,850 Euro in Germany yet it is only $72,900 USD in the US.
The R8 is an exotic daily driver with "only" 425 HP so it's closest competitor is the $106,000 Porsche 911 GT3 with 415 hp rather than the $175,000 Lamborghini Gallardo or the $179,000 Ferrari F430 (both of which have about 5% less weight and 20% more power).
Also keep in mind that the $123,000 480hp Porsche 911 Turbo and the $128,000 510 HP Mercedes Benz SL55 AMG will both outperform the 425 HP Audi R8, and Acura and Lexus are both coming out with 500 HP imitations of the R8, so if the R8 is priced above these cars it will be a tough sell.
A 5.0L 10cyl Gallardo engine with 512 HP will justify a higher price for that version of the R8, but will also add weight to a car that is already heavier than the Gallardo. At 20% more weight, it will still not perform as well as the Gallardo or 911 Turbo (both of which are also mid engine AWD vehicles).
Therefore, I expect base US prices for a 425 HP R8 to be between $105,000 & $110,000 and the US prices for a 500+ V10 R8 to start at about $120,000 - $130,000.
Of course, the must have all LED lights are going to cost some additional coin. The Bang & Olufsen sound system, even at $6,300 will be hard to resist, and rear visibility in the R8 isn't spectacular so the parking assist option is a good investment. Since this is an exotic car to be driven every day, it would be foolish not to get the premium seats, Sirius sattellite radio and iPod integration. So the take-home price will be about $125,000 + tax, but that's fully loaded. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 24.20.104.230 (talk) 23:12, 2 March 2007 (UTC).
UPDATE: Both Road & Track and Car & Driver's April 2007 issues have feature articles on the R8. They both estimate a base US price of $110,000. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.20.104.230 (talk) 17:20, 8 March 2007 (UTC)
The R8's closest competitor is the $106,000 Porsche 911 GT3 with nearly identical specs and performance characteristics (actually slightly better).
A 5.0L 10cyl Gallardo engine with 512 HP will be competitive with the Porsche 911 Turbo and will therefore have to be priced similiarly.
Both of these articles have useful information but unfortunately both magazines decided to compare the $100,000 Audi A8 to the substantially less expensive Porsche 911's Carerra's instead of the similarly priced 911 GT3. Audi probably forbid a comparison to the GT3 (or 911 turbo) since the GT3 edges the R8 slightly on performance (0-60 in 4.0 seconds, quarter mile in 12.0 sec, and top speed of 193 mph).
Unlike the GT3, though, the R8 is truly exotic and sexy with a totally unique look that is recognizably Audi. It's that flying car from the future in "I Robot", not that car in "Risky Business" where Tom Cruise plays the part of an 18 year old boy. It turns heads even when next to a Ferrari. A race car driver once told me, "Everyone wants a Ferrari until they have one. Then they want a Porsche." Finally we can have both in a single car. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Xanderale (talk • contribs) 18:28, 8 March 2007 (UTC)
NFS Carbon
[edit]- I removed the reference to the fact you could purchase the Audi Le Mans Quattro in NFS Carbon - as you could only drive it once you had completed the game, but not purchase it. (82.32.50.164 20:30, 10 July 2007 (UTC))
Seen this car
[edit]I don't really have much to add to the article but I'm just saying that I saw this car on the 12th of August 2007, at the British superbike racing held at Croft Circuit. It didn't go on the circuit but it was in an Audi area, as another type of Audi was the make of the pace car. It didn't go on the circuit though it did drive round the area for part of the day. That information is proberly not useful but I thought I'd say it anyway —Preceding unsigned comment added by Bunker fox (talk • contribs) 13:24, 16 August 2007 (UTC)
I have also seen this car, on a public road in the United States (Charleston, South Carolina). The car had US plates. This was on (or very near) January 12th, 2008. The statement in the article that this car is not available in the US until summer 2008 appears to be wrong, as this car is definitely available in the States, at least to this one individual. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 76.26.209.148 (talk) 03:10, 19 January 2008
I saw one a couple of weeks ago in England, place called Stockport near a glass pyramid. It was white. Why would you spend £100,000+ on a car and paint it white —Preceding unsigned comment added by 80.254.146.20 (talk) 14:35, 7 August 2008 (UTC)
I saw one here in Toronto a few weeks ago while it was raining badly, it was speeding north on Bathurst Street. The Next day I saw a white one, also on Bathurst. Before that, I saw 2 in Moscow (one was at the dealership) and 2 in St. Petersburg. A delight to watch this car, absolute beauty. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 99.225.247.187 (talk) 05:53, 4 September 2008 (UTC)
I think I saw it appear in the music video of World Behind My Wall (a song by Tokio Hotel) and in the movie 17 Again. And here, in Hong Kong, I've seen one in bright orange if my eyes were well-functioning. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 203.218.133.157 (talk) 19:07, 30 August 2010 (UTC)

Diesel V10
[edit]This past Tuesday (23 Oct 2007) I was given to undertstand by staff at the newly-opened Audi center at Infineon Raceway that the R8 will be supplied with a diesel V10 in the fall of 2008. Since Wiki isn't the place for original research, I strongly suggest that editors keep an eye out for the first unconfirmed rumor in print :) Grossmcb 21:52, 25 October 2007 (UTC)

[edit]I don't see the point of a disambiguation page with only two entries, you might as well reference the other on each page. Jamie Kitson 28 Oct 2007
- and i don't see the point of redirecting to Audi R8 (road car), when you could instead just move the article to Audi R8 (and avoid the uneccesary redirect).--BSI (talk) 16:12, 25 November 2007 (UTC)

LED headlamps
[edit]I cannot find anything in this article about the Audi R8 being the first car in the world to use LED headlamps. Here's an article. I think this is a major feature that sets the car apart from others. 124.170.206.4 (talk) 23:51, 6 April 2008 (UTC)

Fuel capacity
[edit]Fuel capacity is listed in the sidebar as 75 L (16.5 imp gal; 19.8 US gal). For the Europen version, this would seem to be correct as per http://www.audi.de/de/brand/de/neuwagen/r8/r8/technische_daten_und.html . However, the US model has a fuel capacity of 90 L (23.8 US gal) as per http://www.audiusa.com/audi/us/en2/new_cars/Audi_R8.html . —Preceding unsigned comment added by 198.74.38.59 (talk) 20:08, 9 June 2009 (UTC)

[edit]I added a neutrality tag since the section has zero criticism, rather just pieces together positive comments. Also the only lap time is a favorable one. Pussywello (talk) —Preceding undated comment added 12:06, 11 December 2009 (UTC).
- Have you tired finding any 'negative' reviews? If ALL available reviews from various sources are all 'positive', then the neutrality banner needs removing. Same for the lap times. 78.32.143.113 (talk) 16:05, 18 January 2010 (UTC)

- Rename to "Audi R8" and include the references to the 'race car' and other variants in the main article. As a normal user rather than auto expert I would have no idea from the article why "(road car)" was added to the name or what a "road car" is. Sussexonian (talk) 21:48, 20 February 2010 (UTC)

Power rating
[edit]The Audi UK R8 brochure [4] states engine outputs are measured according to Directive 80/1269/EEC. From what I've read, this is not an identical standard to the older DIN 70020 (see here or here for instance), so it would be misleading to describe the quoted power ratings for this (or any other engine measured according to 80/1269) as "DIN-rated", IMHO. Letdorf (talk) 13:53, 18 February 2010 (UTC).

Proper spelling of quattro
[edit]The proper spelling of "quattro" is lower case in all references to all Audi models including the unit that manufacturers quattro products except the original (1980) Audi Quattro. As follows, from the Audi Media Services page:
- Ingolstadt, 2010-03-09
- The history of quattro GmbH
- 1983 Establishment of quattro GmbH on October 14 as a fully-owned subsidiary of AUDI AG, with registered offices in Neckarsulm, Germany. One of the company’s first business areas was the sale of exclusive lifestyle articles. In the mid-eighties, the premium automobile manufacturer’s subsidiary launched its own shop concept for dealers. The highly versatile quattro shop enabled a range of high-quality lifestyle products to be presented in an exclusive way.
- 1994 Midway through the 1990s, quattro GmbH became a registered automobile manufacturer with responsibility for customizing AUDI AG models. Customers were able to choose from an extensive customization program, which developed rapidly in the years that followed, and included individual leather, brilliant special paint finishes and the first multimedia equipment [etc.].[1]
Also, from the Wikipedia page for quattro GmbH as of this date:
The company takes its name as a homage to Audi's original four-wheel drive rally-inspired road car – the Audi Quattro, and as part of bowing to that homage, always spells its 'quattro GmbH' name with a leading lower-case 'q'.
If that's how Audi likes it, then that's how it's spelled (except, evidently, in the Wikipedia article title when editing that page and to begin sentences). Wikiuser100 (talk) 21:22, 7 February 2011 (UTC)

Specifications
[edit]The specifications data should use the official factory data, not some magazine/website clocked one. These additonal datas can anyway used as in main text if there is good reason to have backing data. The problem with magazine data is that there is available all sort of measurements, with using factory data we can be sure they are comparable to other articles data -->Typ932 T·C 05:00, 13 March 2011 (UTC)

7-speed manual?
[edit]In the infobox on the right side of the page, under "Powertrain", it says the Audi R8 is available in 6-speed manual AND 7-speed manual, but it actually never mentions the 7-speed manual option in the article. I'm almost 100% sure there isn't a 7-speed manual for this car, so that should probably be looked into/changed. 129.63.30.229 (talk) 18:16, 7 February 2014 (UTC)

Proposed Merge with Audi R8 etron
[edit]I think that the article Audi R8 etron should be merged into this article as the Audi R8 e-tron is a derivative of the Audi R8 and its development is already partially covered in this article. The 'Audi R8 etron' article is also nothing more than a stub, meaning that it will not have a detrimental effect on page length on the merged article. --FactualCollector7d1 (talk) 05:49, 26 August 2016 (UTC)

Split proposal
[edit]Should the first and second generation R8 articles be split and this article be made into the general R8 article similar to the BMW 8 Series? I gave the proposal because the article is very large in size due to multiple headings. U1 quattro TALK 05:16, 29 March 2019 (UTC)
- That seems like a good idea. Toasted Meter (talk) 05:56, 29 March 2019 (UTC)
I'll get to work then. U1 quattro TALK 06:58, 29 March 2019 (UTC)
