Urban area

When someone feels the need to change something that is stable for years, based on sources and regular users do not dispute it, at least you expect from him instead of an edit war to explain his views. Well, the Athens urban area is perfectly defined today, since:

1. the administrative division of the Kallikratis Plan (2011) is clear about which municipalities form the Athens greater area: the municipalitites of Central, North, South and West Athens.
2. this administrative division follows the Kapodistrias reform (1998), when the same municipalities were included in the Athens Prefecture.

Citing as sources official dosuments from 2001, that have lists of the municipalities of the Athens urban area before any of the aforementioned reforms was implemented, in a time when greater Athens was not yet defined as an administrative unity, is pointless. We are in 2019, things have changed, municipalities that back in 1991 were considered part of the - not yet officially/administratively defined - Athens greater area, are definitely excluded from it now (that we have officially defined administrative units) and belong to East Attica and West Attica, otherwise they would be included in any of the Athens regional units. Climate data

I am continuing the discussion from my talk page here. The data for the weather box are for the period 1955-1997 . I believe newer official data for the period between 2001-2108 should be shown first. Religion

There's a bar chart that shows Muslims as accounting for 9% of the population. The source cited for it gives no actual definite figures for adherents to Islam in Athens. Are we really to believe that one in every ten Athenians is Muslim? There are no figures for atheists/non-religious either. The site does not make any reference regarding irreligious people. Agrae

Agrae redirects here. But what is "Agrae"? The article doesn't mention it at all, and Google isn't much help either. @Fordmadoxfraud: you created the redirect once upon a time. Can you explain? Lennart97 (talk) 13:22, 1 July 2021 (UTC)

Contemporary history

Metro Area has to be wrong.

There is no way the metro area of Athens is about 3000 km2. I measured the loosest possible area containing Athens and it's 1500 km2. About a quarter of it is the Saronic Gulf. I think this is a very sneaky vandalization attempt. We should look into correcting that. Atlas821 (talk) 13:34, 6 November 2022 (UTC)

2004 Olympics

I read a lot of unhappiness with this article above. Too long, too hard to read. It does seem to me the article has slipped out of control. There are two solutions as I see it. First, offload. There is a lot of marginally relevant list-type material. I started in on that with a few items. Second, edit out the fluff. There are some loci of redundant material. On 2004 Olympics we refer to a main, which is long and detailed, but we keep a long and detailed intro. The same details are in the main and even more so. So, I tentatively just cut the section down to what seemed to me a good intro. "During the first three years of preparations, the International Olympic Committee had expressed concern over the speed of construction progress for some of the new Olympic venues. In 2000, the Organising Committee's president was replaced by Gianna Angelopoulos-Daskalaki, who was the president of the original Bidding Committee in 1997. From that point forward, preparations continued at a highly accelerated, almost frenzied pace.

The 2004 Games were judged a success, as both security and organization worked well, and only a few visitors reported minor problems mainly concerning accommodation issues. The 2004 Olympic Games were described as "unforgettable, dream games", by IOC President Jacques Rogge for their return to the birthplace of the Olympics, and for meeting the challenges of holding the Olympic Games. The only observable problem was a somewhat sparse attendance of some early events. Eventually, however, a total of more than 3.5 million tickets were sold, which was higher than any other Olympics with the exception of Sydney (more than 5 million tickets were sold there in 2000).

In 2008, it was reported that most of the Olympic venues had fallen into disrepair: according to those reports, 21 of the 22 facilities built for the games had either been left abandoned or are in a state of dereliction, with several squatter camps having sprung up around certain facilities, and a number of venues afflicted by vandalism, graffiti or strewn with rubbish. These claims were disputed and are likely to be inaccurate, as most of the facilities used for the Athens Olympics are either in use or in the process of being converted for post-Olympics use. The Greek Government has created a corporation, Olympic Properties SA, which is overseeing the post-Olympics management, development and conversion of these facilities, some of which will be sold off (or have already been sold off) to the private sector, while other facilities are still in use just as during the Olympics, or have been converted for commercial use or modified for other sports. Concerts and theatrical shows, such as those by the troupe Cirque du Soleil, have recently been held in the complex."
