Comment

[edit]

There are definitely some riders missing from the roster, quite some of them Kazachstani (like Assan Bazayev, the winner of the first stage in the Tour of Germany). —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 131.174.122.220 (talk) 14:49, August 2, 2006

Swiss Based

[edit]

I believe the team is based in Switzerland and no longer in Luxembourg, though I can't seem to find the info on their website. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 216.226.223.11 (talk) 20:04, 29 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

On the contrary. Astana team is Luxembourg-based actually. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 92.46.137.117 (talk) 18:26, 16 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Proposed split

[edit]

I think that the time has come where the history and organisation of Team ONCE and Liberty Seguros-Wurth are significantly different from Astana Team, with Manolo Saiz holding the licence of the former yet most personnel now being with the latter. I am keen to see how this develops over the winter, but it seems the teams are disparate to separate the Spanish and Swiss based versions. Mk3severo 12:14, 29 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

It is a valid argument, but I think we'll have to wait until the European season starts and see how it all shakes out. Perhaps you could write a paragraph that roughly details the current problems with there being two teams considered as Team Astana? kju 10:44, 12 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I agree. Now that Saiz has lost his licence, and Astana has been granted a Pro Tour licence, it seems to me that one team has reached the end of its life, and a different one has begun. 74.70.68.8 03:36, 20 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I don't agree. There were still quite a few riders under contract with Saiz, and I'm not sure, but I think he still holds his licence. --Selach 17:00, 8 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Saiz lost the license, so they are different teams. [1] The only issue here is how to deal with the team from when Astana started to sponsor the Saiz squad, to when Saiz lost his license and Astana gained their new license. SeveroTC 17:09, 8 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Fair use rationale for Image:Astana Jersey 2007 Tour de France.png

[edit]

Image:Astana Jersey 2007 Tour de France.png is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If there is other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images uploaded after 4 May, 2006, and lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.

Ambiguity

[edit]

The section on the current financial woes of the team - it's a little less than clear which uses of "Astana" refer to the Kazakh capital city and which refer to the team. A sentence like "UCI President Pat McQuaid is planning a visit to Astana during the Giro to discuss the team's future" is most ambiguous. It needs to be made abundantly clear which Astana is which, and the best way to do that may be with repeated wikilinks. Nosleep break my slumber 16:27, 18 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Or describe who he is visiting i.e. "planning a visit to the team's sponsors in Kazakhstan" etc. SeveroTC 16:48, 18 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, you're right. That was actually quite a stupid idea. Nosleep break my slumber 17:42, 18 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Crud. I was just coming by to withdraw the RM, since the financial issue presents a very real possibility that in just a few days' time this team won't be called "Astana" or "Astana Team" or "Astana cycling team" or anything like that at all. We had this discussion at the worst possible time :( Nosleep break my slumber 18:01, 29 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

No problem. Changing the name was the right thing to do, even if this becomes an Armstrong/Bruyneel/Nike team in a few days. - AyaK (talk) 01:47, 30 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not a big fan of parenthetical qualifiers when they can reasonably be avoided, but I can find no indication that the word "Team" is in fact part of this team's name (same thing happened a while back with the article that used to be called Team Garmin-Slipstream). The UCI-registered name for the team going back through 2007 is simply "Astana" (even the old ONCE team that was briefly called Astana was just called "Astana" and not "Astana Team" by the UCI). The team's logo and official website say "Astana cycling team" but I believe this actually backs me up - the Toronto Blue Jays baseball club, for example, is known formally as exactly that. With the use of {{ct}} becoming more common, and with it gradually replacing regular links in old pages (many of which, by the way, were [[Astana Team|Astana]]), not a whole lot of effort needs to go into bypassing the new redirect. Astana Team would still be a perfectly valid redirect, actually, as a likely search term. Nosleep break my slumber 21:12, 21 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Or Astana cycling team or Astana Cycling Team which they seem to use. SeveroTC 22:22, 21 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Not sure I'd go for that. "Astana" is pretty clearly the common name of the team, as well as being the name given by the UCI. Toronto Blue Jays would never be moved to Toronto Blue Jays baseball club. If you think an overriding Wikipedia naming convention applies, do tell. Inaccurate

[edit]

It is inaccurate to say that Astana has no connection with ONCE. The history of the establishment of Astana is complex - though it is a different team from ONCE, its creation is still closely linked with ONCe, and the parenthetical note at the top, along with the ignoring of ONCE in this article, is simply inaccurate. Phil Sandifer (talk) 18:07, 12 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Noticed this a while ago but hadn't got round to writing a better hatnote... SeveroTC 18:49, 12 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
WP:SOFIXIT. The point is that the "Astana" team from 2006 is not the "Astana" team that began in 2007. If you think that needs to be worded better or that the hatnote isn't necessary at all, make the change. Nosleep break my slumber 15:07, 14 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I see that someone already has. Lovely. Nosleep break my slumber 15:09, 14 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Disposition of riders for 2010 section

[edit]

I would have to contend that this is recentism, to the extent of using Wiki as a newsfeed. Will it really be of interest to people reading an article on this team in a few years' time where 2009's riders ended up in 2010. If that level of detail is wanted, then a season article Astana in 2009 would be required. Kevin McE (talk) 17:19, 3 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

2009 Astana season. I wrote it there (and used that exact title for the section), but I'm not the one who put it in this article. I tend to agree with your reasoning. Alex finds herself awake at night (Talk · What keeps her up) 02:08, 4 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I have removed the section from this article and inserted it in 2009 Astana season. It is suitable for that article, but not this one. Alex finds herself awake at night (Talk · What keeps her up) 00:07, 17 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

It seems that Bruyneel and/or his management company owns this domain name. Go there, and there's a really nice memorial video for the 2008-2009 Bruyneel-led Astana team, but nothing about the current team. Certain backlinks still work, such as http://www.astana-cyclingteam.com/roster.html , which shows the 2009 team roster. So is there a site for the 2010 team? Nosleep (Talk · Contribs) 02:47, 3 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

This one probably, but it is not yet open.--EdgeNavidad (talk) 10:48, 22 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Article name

[edit]

I have changed name to Astana Pro Team, because it's the official team name. See official website, official UCI profile, logo, etc.--ChelseaFunNumberOne (talk) 21:05, 5 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Rubbish article

[edit]

This is a completely rubbish entry. Random facts from decades ago, very little background and overview. 2603:8080:1F00:9810:E90A:766A:6DD:4F4B (talk) 13:50, 14 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
