Requested move 17 September 2023
[edit]- The following is a closed discussion of a requested move. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section on the talk page. Editors desiring to contest the closing decision should consider a move review after discussing it on the closer's talk page. No further edits should be made to this discussion.
The result of the move request was: moved. The initial proposal to move to "Tiffanie" has no consensus behind it. However, there is a consensus to move to "Tiffanie (cat)". (The proposer had updated the nomination to the alternative proposed title). (closed by non-admin page mover) – robertsky (talk) 13:13, 5 October 2023 (UTC)
– Tiffanie or Asian Longhair is the only official name for the breed (or subbreed under de Asian) used in the cat registries. Some have it as Tiffanie (Asian Semi-Longhair). Asian Semi-Longhair is a term used by some in the cat fancy, but is not the official breed name in the registries. It seems more logical to me to use the official name, Tiffanie, for this article. - Note: pages with content, such as Tiffanie, are ineligible to be proposed titles in move requests unless they, too, are formally dispositioned. "Tiffanie → Tiffanie (disambiguation)" has been added to this request to meet that requirement. P.I. Ellsworth , ed. put'er there 18:18, 17 September 2023 (UTC)
- I see. Probably Tiffanie (cat breed) or Tiffanie (cat) would be a better title than Tiffanie. YukiKoKo (talk) 19:13, 17 September 2023 (UTC)

- I believe that this would be a good change, it definitely makes more logical sense, Tiffanie is definitely the most commonly used by fanciers. It is what they're labeled as in the show hall in GCCF, even though registered as "Asian Longhair (Tiffanie)" Catfanaticmeow (talk) 12:27, 17 September 2023 (UTC)
- Oppose as proposed since moving dab page main title header from Tiffanie to Tiffanie (disambiguation) would be contrary to WP:ONEOTHER. Would not oppose, however, deletion of the Tiffanie dab page and addition of hatnote atop the cat breed article pointing to Tiffanie (given name) which lists four women with that name. It may be also noted that the cat breed has three redirects — Tiffany (cat), Tiffanie (cat) and Asian Longhair. —Roman Spinner (talk • contribs) 00:12, 18 September 2023 (UTC)
- That could work. I will say, though, that the case for moving this is weak. Only a fraction of the registries use this name, and the others call it Asian Semi-longhair, Asian Longhair, or Burmilla Longhair. — SMcCandlish ☏ ¢ 😼 08:13, 18 September 2023 (UTC)
- Support per nom, seems to be PRIMARY for that spelling variation.--Ortizesp (talk) 17:04, 18 September 2023 (UTC)
- From a long-term significance perspective, a niche cat breed and a niche human name don't seem like a set where the average reader would ever strongly prefer a cat breed. If we look at usage, with e.g. monthly views of topics named Tiffanie, with Tiffany for comparison (same pronunciation, right?), I don't think it's likely that the average English reader associates the term Tiffanie so strongly with the cat breed that we should short circuit navigation like this. Indeed, if we look at how the addition of a separate given name article affects navigation, this looks like another bad case of WP:NAMELIST. Tiffanie (cat) or Tiffanie (cat breed) or something to that effect seems like something that might work better for the proposer. (Oppose) --Joy (talk) 08:32, 24 September 2023 (UTC)
- Oppose as worded. No primary topic. I've never heard of the cat breed so I'm not qualified to judge what its common name is, but if it is moved then Tiffanie (cat) or Tiffanie (cat breed) would be best. -- Necrothesp (talk) 12:15, 26 September 2023 (UTC)
- Relisting comment: I don't see a consensus forming for the proposed move. However, there are alternate proposed titles which one may consider: Tiffanie (cat) or Tiffanie (cat breed). – robertsky (talk) 15:41, 4 October 2023 (UTC)
- @Robertsky actually it looks like the proposer accepted this suggestion in https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Talk:Asian_Semi-longhair&diff=prev&oldid=1177776772 but it was reverted on a technical issue. Let me try to re-do that edit correctly. --Joy (talk) 10:27, 5 October 2023 (UTC)

Followup note: "Tiffanie (cat)" was an error; that means "an individual cat named Tiffanie" (cf. Category:Individual cats); "Tiffany cat" is how breed names are disambiguated (cf. Category:Cat breeds). The same conventions are applied throughout all the domestic animal breed articles. So, I haved moved Tiffanie (cat) to Tiffanie cat per WP:CONSISTENT policy. — SMcCandlish ☏ ¢ 😼 17:46, 20 January 2024 (UTC)
Contradiction between two articles
[edit]There is a contradiction between List of experimental cat breeds#Tiffanie and List of experimental cat breeds#Australian Tiffanie, and this article Tiffanie cat, in which the former says that Tiffanie (UK breed, a.k.a. Burmilla Longhair and other names) and Australian Tiffanie are different breeds (which makes sense or they would not be named that way), while the latter asserts they are the same breed. From what I can tell, they have similar foundation stock, but the Australian one has direct back-crossing to one of the progenitor breeds while the established (UK) Tiffanie does not. Bears some investigation, especially by someone caught up on Australian breeding and which organisations over there even still exist and what they are up to. — SMcCandlish ☏ ¢ 😼 04:41, 13 November 2023 (UTC); revised: 16:58, 20 January 2024 (UTC)
