I have a major objection to the section regarding the formation of Antarctic Intermediate Water (AAIW). Firstly, AAIW isn't even mentioned until the third paragraph of this section. The article assigns too much weight to Ekman transport: this is certainly an important factor in the subduction of AAIW into the world's oceans but it is not known (and very unlikely) that it is the only factor. It also talks too long about North Atlantic Deep Water and Antarctic Bottom Water, which confuses the matter. The phrase 'The formation of AAIW can be explained very simply' is not a little deceiving given that the formation of AAIW is still a topic of scientific debate. Much of the arguement centres on whether AAIW is formed in the deep winter mixed layers of the South East Pacific (McCartney, Deep Sea Research [1977], Talley, The South Atlantic: Present and Past Circulation) or in the Winter Water of the Bellinghausen Sea (Santoso and England, Journal of Physical Oceanography, Garabato et al., Journal of Climate). — Preceding unsigned comment added by Ger the sea (talkcontribs) 11:28, 24 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
