The confusion about Anselme Payen's birthdate comes from the mixing of two different calendars: one used at the end of the French Revolution: 17 nivôse, an III, which corresponds to January 6, 1795. He came from a family of scientists and was homeschooled. According to a eulogy delivered in 1873, he was a chemist only. Applications of his discoveries went to agriculture, medicine and army supplies, among others.
