Anne García-Romero

Anne García-Romero is a Latina playwright, translator and professor.

Early Life

Anne García-Romero was born to a mother is of English, Irish and German decent and a father from Spain.(cite interview) Her work has been greatly influence by her ethnic and cultural background, as many of her plays deal with the gap between the White communities and the Latino community. She also translates plays from Spanish to English, as part of her work. García-Romero received her B.A., Occidental College and then went on to the Yale School of Drama, where she received her Masters in Fine Arts majoring in Playwriting (cite her website). She completed her Ph.D. at UC Santa Barbara, where she majored in Theater Studies. García-Romero is also an alumna of New Dramatists in NYC, which is an organization that specifically supports and provides resources to talented playwrights.

Career

Romero has taught at universities such as USC, Cal Arts, Loyola Marymount University, Macalester College and Wesleyan University. She currently teaches at Notre Dame (her website). Some of the courses that she teaches are Playwriting, Script Analysis, and Story Structure (school website). She has written eight major full-length plays, her most popular are Juanita’s Statue, Paloma, Earthquake Chica, Provenance. Her plays have been presented in prestigious theaters all over the country. These theaters include, but are not limited to the New York Shakespeare Festival/Public Theater, INTAR, The Mark Taper Forum, Borderlands Theater, East L.A. Repertory, Jungle Theater, National Hispanic Cultural Center. She has also written three short-length plays, which have garnered her much recognition as well.
