Title

[edit]

A short time ago, this article was renamed, from All the Years Combine, to Grateful Dead: All the Years Combine – The DVD Collection. I'm going to rename it back now. Renaming an article is a major and significant change that should generally be discussed on the talk page first. A consensus of editors should agree to the new name, and enough time should be taken for interested editors to contribute to the discussion. How long that should be varies, but I'm thinking two or three weeks would be appropriate in this case. No need to be hasty. So, what should this article be named? All the Years Combine, or Grateful Dead: All the Years Combine – The DVD Collection? Or something else? The assumption being that the name of the article should be the same as the name of the box set, whatever that is. Mudwater (Talk) 02:18, 13 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

  • All the Years Combine -- That's the title of the box set. The DVD Collection is the subtitle. Grateful Dead is the name of the band, which is why it also appears on the cover. Mudwater (Talk) 02:18, 13 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
  • I don't understand where this "subtitle" thing comes in to play; album/video titles don't have subtitles, they have titles. The name is Grateful Dead: All the Years Combine: The DVD Collection on Amazon and All the Years Combine: The DVD Collection on Allmusic. Where is the source to the title only being All the Years Combine? And in regards to the band name being in the title, most video releases include it as part of the title, beats me, but it's how it's most commonly done. Zac (talk) 03:13, 13 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
    • I'm thinking that The DVD Collection is the sub-title -- not part of the title itself -- because it comes after a colon. That's generally how titles and sub-titles are separated. Certainly that applies to books, and I believe it applies to albums or box sets also. But if not, then the title of the box set is actually All the Years Combine: The DVD Collection -- with a colon instead of a dash, and still without the "Grateful Dead". Normally album or video covers have both the name of the album and the name of the band, which is why it says "Grateful Dead" on the cover. So, Amazon is incorrect in including "Grateful Dead" as part of the title. Mudwater (Talk) 03:37, 13 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
      • For whatever it's worth, here are two more links. On dead.net, what appears to be the main page for the box set, here, has the title as All the Years Combine: The DVD Collection. But also on dead.net, an article by Blair Jackson, about Bruce Hornsby, here, refers to it as All the Years Combine. Mudwater (Talk) 03:43, 13 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
      • Things after the colon are still part of its title. If you look on the subtitle article itself, it shows articles for examples with the colons attached as part of the title. I think Allmusic is the best way to go for sourcing the title. So do we agree the title to be All the Years Combine: The DVD Collection? Zac (talk) 03:47, 13 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
        • Something like this is often done in articles: All the Years Combine: The DVD Collection, commonly referred to as simply All the Years Combine, is a box set of videos by the rock band the Grateful Dead. Zac (talk) 03:47, 13 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
          • The Grateful Dead Family Discography (deaddisc.com) also has it as All the Years Combine: The DVD Collection, here. According to this idea, the part of the title after the colon is still part of the title, even though it might also be a sub-title. That could also apply to Skeletons from the Closet: The Best of Grateful Dead. So, what do you think about renaming the article to All the Years Combine: The DVD Collection -- without the "Grateful Dead", which I'm still convinced is not part of the title of the box set? (Even if you agree, we should still wait two or three weeks to let other editors join in this discussion.) Mudwater (Talk) 10:46, 13 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

It's been three weeks. I'm going ahead with the rename, to All the Years Combine: The DVD Collection. Mudwater (Talk) 00:56, 4 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]
