Spelling of name

[edit]

There seems to be some uncertainty about whether his name is spelled Pérot or Perot. The external links here disagree. The French Wikipedia has it as Alfred Perot, but has the interferometer as Interféromètre de Fabry-Pérot. Can anyone provide an authoritative reference as to the spelling?--Srleffler 16:06, 30 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Done. Han-Kwang (t) 17:47, 2 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
But not all that well, by the looks of it. Getting a reference is one thing; interpreting it for our use is an entirely different story. I don't read French and can't figure out a whole lot from that explanation. But it seems to have to do at least in part with a birth registration, which doesn't have a whole lot of relevance for our purposes.
An article which uses one spelling proves nothing much. We don't necessarily base it on some official registry. It ought to be based on how he is best known, and in particular, how he is best known in English. If a consistent spelling was in fact used by him in published articles, or as the article says "Perot himself used the spelling Pérot in scientific publications", then that is likely how he was best known and probaly what we should use.
The Library of Congress, for example, uses "Pérot, Alfred, 1863-1925" in connection with two works,
  1. a book by him, The decimal metric system, foundation, international organisation, future development, by Alfred Pérot ... Published/Created: Paris, Typ. Plon-Nourrit et cie, 1915 Description: 2 p.l., 12 p. 19 cm.
  2. a book by Fabry, Main Title: Charles Fabry. Œuvres choisies, publiées à l’occasion de son jubilé scientifique. Published/Created: Paris, Gauthier-Villars, 1938. Related Names: Macé de Lépinay, Jules Charles Antione, 1851-1904. Pérot, Alfred, 1863-1925 Buisson, Henri, 1873- Description: vi, 695, [1] p. incl. front. (port.) illus. diagrs., VII pl. 28 cm.
What other evidence is there of how he was actually known? Gene Nygaard 20:18, 2 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Translation of the French: Pérot or Perot? In the last issue of "Photoniques", we wrote Pérot, after the spelling that Alfred Perot himself used to sign his articles. Several readers pointed out to us that the official spelling - that is, the spelling mentioned on the birth certificate - does not have an accent. Therefore we return to that spelling.
I thought it was logical to name this article "Perot" since the French are picky enough about it that writing "Alfred Pérot" in a publication leads to several complaints from readers. But actually I don't care that much how the article is called; feel free to move it back to the old title. Han-Kwang (t) 21:41, 2 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Gene, the reference Hankwang located is more than just one article that happens to use one spelling. Rather, it directly addresses the question of the spelling of Perot's name, which is what I was looking for. The reference establishes that "Perot" was the official spelling on the man's birth registry, but that he used Pérot in his professional career. Excellent work, Hankwang! I agree that this leaves open the question of which spelling is appropriate for this article. Ironically, you might find that "Perot" is the more common spelling in English, because of the unfortunate tendancy for English speakers to drop accents when spelling foreign names, even in published media.--Srleffler 03:40, 3 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

For the record, I agree with Gene's suggestion that Fabry-Pérot interferometer might be the correct name for the article on the device, even if Alfred Perot is the correct name for this article. The former is likely the most commonly-used form in English. The latter is less clear.--Srleffler 17:42, 4 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
