How to refer to OL Reign name change

[edit]

Alana Cook played for OL Reign during their name change to Seattle Reign. Typically when a team name changes, you list all of the unique team names that the player played for (ex. The Washington Football Team - see: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tress_Way). Thus I believed Cook's career should say "OL / Seattle Reign" but user, Kokoeist, undid my edit. Is there a different system for changes of team name when it comes to soccer clubs versus other American sports teams? RMcEvoy128 (talk) 07:51, 14 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Upon doing some further research myself, I found that the accepted method in this situation is to use the club's latest name (so in this case, "Seattle Reign") while applying an explanatory footnote to acknowledge the name-change during the person's tenure. For example, see Peter Vermes and Graham Zusi - a coach and player, respectively, who were part of Sporting Kansas City during the 2010 rebrand from the Kansas City Wizards.
