Scientific name

Does anyone know which species African Pygmy Mouse actually refers to as there are 3 different redirects to this page:

  • Mus minutoides
  • Mus kasaicus
  • Mus musculoides

I'm going to cancel the redirects until we can work out which one is correct. Andrewself (talk) 11:45, 24 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

The page currently refers to all three, but M. musculoides clearly warrants its own page. It's one of the older rodent pages and appears to have applied a taxonomy based on something other than the Mammal Species of the World series (as even vol. 2 splits it from minutoides). The two are hard to tell apart, but are basically separated by geography. I don't see a reason to split kasaicus unless you have a reference for a modern revision. MSW3 treats it as a synonym of musculoides. Even IUCN is not recognizing it. I don't think a one sentence page saying that X species is a mouse from Africa helps, but I'd encourage you (or others) to make a separate page for M. musculoides. At that point, this (muinutoides page should probably be moved to Southern African Pygmy Mouse. --Aranae (talk) 14:17, 24 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]
