GA Review

[edit]
This review is transcluded from Talk:Adam Smith (forward)/GA1. The edit link for this section can be used to add comments to the review.

Article's pretty good, but I did find some issues:

  • Length-wise, it feels a little lackluster given the length of his career.
  • "Smith was born on 20 February 1985 in Huddersfield, West Yorkshire and was spotted playing in the Huddersfield and District Association Football League for Lepton Highlanders and trialled at Huddersfield Town at the age of 14 and Oldham Athletic at 15." run-on.
  • Not too much on the personal life front; could more be added?
  • Make sure to link jargon terms (i.e. friendly) - I likely know what they are, but those unfamiliar with association football may not.
  • I guess my main issue with the article is just that it pretty much consists of "he played in x in y season, scored a goal. next season, scored here, got injured. next season. etc." It feels like it lacks completeness - his career and numbers are complete, yet is that it?

I'll give you a few days to fix the above, and i'll put it on hold. the last point is more one to think over, since it's worrying, but at the same time I don't know how major a player he is (doesn't look like too frequent a player, but i wouldn't know as i'm not a soccer (sorry) enthusiast.) Smith has spent his career playing in League One to the Conference North (third to sixth levels of English football), so he's quite a minor player. I would say there's not much more to write about a footballer than they played, scored, got injured etc, but I'll obviously look for some sources and see how I can expand the article. • The changes made look good. I'll keep it on hold for a few days since I'm busy rl and it'll give you time to see if it can be expanded. If it can't that's fine, i'll probably still pass it. (his name being so common doesn't make it any easier, so there's no rush). Wizardman 20:12, 9 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

After re-reading and mulling it over, I've decided to pass the article :) Wizardman 01:31, 13 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

2019-20 appearances

[edit]

Smith's 2019-20 appearances for Grantham haven't been included in either the infobox or the Career Statistics section of the article because the season was cancelled for COVID19. I haven't seen this approach taken elsewhere - perhaps this is a discussion for WikiProjectFootball? I am inclined to add them back in for consistency. Although this would definitely be an example of recency bias (no one includes the 1939-40 stats for the season that was curtailed for World War II), the 2019-20 FA Trophy and Lincolnshire Senior Cup weren't voided so as a minimum Smith's appearance in these should be listed. Plus, with hindsight only tiers 7 & 8 of the English game were voided - tiers 1-6 concluded as normal (some based on points per game), while tiers 9 and below promoted teams based on results from the two COVID-affected seasons. With this in mind it feels particularly harsh to ignore appearances in tiers 7 & 8 as here.

I will probably put this change through before I forget, but if you disagree feel free to contribute here or start a wider discussion elsewhere, and don't hesitate to revert me! Cheers Nonleagueapps (talk) 21:56, 31 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
