[edit]NEW COMMANDER FOR ARMY NATIONAL GUARD'S 213TH SUPPORT GROUP
FORT INDIANTOWN GAP, Pa., Jan. 23 /PRNewswire/ -- Col. Larry G. Powell of Stoystown, Somerset County, has been appointed commander of the Pennsylvania Army National Guard's 213th Support Group, state Adjutant General Gerald T. Sajer announced today. "Colonel Powell is an outstanding officer and leader," Sajer said in announcing the appointment. "He's exactly the right person to command the 213th as the Guard adjusts to the new demands of the Army in the years ahead." Powell, 52, assumes command of the unit on Feb. 2. He succeeds Col. Charles M. Bechtel, who has been reassigned to National Guard headquarters here as the new chief maintenance officer. The 213th and the 28th Division are the two major components of the Pennsylvania Army Guard. The 213th also is a major support element in the Army's overall force structure. All five of the Pennsylvania Army Guard units mobilized for Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm were part of the 213th. The 213th, with 2,200 members, has its headquarters in Allentown. Under its command are the 154th Transportation Battalion, Philadelphia, with units in Williamstown (Dauphin County 131st), Philadelphia (also 131st) and Lebanon (121st). Its 337th Maintenance Battalion, headquartered in Reading, has companies in Lancaster (3622nd), Bethlehem (3623rd) and Fort Indiantown Gap (103rd). It also includes the 108th Combat Support Hospital and the 276th Army Band, both based in Philadelphia; the 28th Finance Unit, based in Lebanon, and the 876th Engineering Battalion, with units in Johnstown, Punxsutawney, Hazleton and Finleyville (Washington County). Powell is a New Castle, Lawrence County, native. His military career began in the Army Reserve in 1966. His Guard service began in 1970 when he joined the staff of the Guard's Military Academy here. He started with the 213th at Johnstown in 1976 with the 876th. He is a 1962 graduate of Pennsylvania State University. After graduation, he worked as a state forester until he formed his own forest management consulting firm in 1968. /delval/
