Too soon?

[edit]

Cbl62: rule of thumb is to wait until a season it over to start creating season articles for the next season. That's only about three weeks away, but we don't even have a complete 2023 schedule out for Texas yet? Also, you've got the personnel sections sourced to 2022 documents. And the roster table is using a non-standard form. Those roster tables are really a huge a mess across the scores of articles where they appear. We ought to migrate them all to the form found at 2022 Michigan Wolverines football team. Jweiss11 (talk) 04:44, 19 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Jweiss11: For the roster tables, I used the format for the 2022 Texas article, though I did delete the flag icons, which I thought were inappropriate. I eliminated the outdated sourcing. As for the complete schedule, it appears not to have been issued yet for conference games. Do you think we should redirect until after the bowl game?? Cbl62 (talk) 07:08, 19 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Redirected for now. Cbl62 (talk) 20:08, 19 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Cbl62, I would recommend that we stop creating more 2023 articles until after January 9. And even then, I would refrain from including roster and staff tables until the schools release them for 2023. Merely interpolating them from 2022 rosters is speculative; there are likely to be various transfers, coaching chances, etc. Jweiss11 (talk) 21:38, 19 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Jweiss11 The season is over for most teams. All that remains is some post-season bowl games. What is difference between today and January 9? Cbl62 (talk) 22:53, 19 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
As for the roster, I thought it was pretty typical to add rosters based on the prior year's roster/expectations. Changes can then be made based on transfers in/out as they happen. Am I wrong about that? Cbl62 (talk) 23:00, 19 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
The established rule of thumb is to wait until the entire season is over—that means January 9 this year. Will something magically happen overnight into the morning of January 10? No. It's a convention to deter article creation before there's much of substance to put in those articles. But let's imagine that it's January 10 right now. This bigger issue that will remain on January 10 is putting uncited, speculative, interpolated projections about 2023 into articles. Let's take the roster at 2023 Michigan Wolverines football team for example, as we are most familiar with that team. Is Corum coming back? Is Mike Morris coming back? I heard Mike Sainristil is coming back as 2020 doesn't count against anyone's eligibility; see [1]. We should wait until Michigan releases a 2023 roster. Until then, this is WP:CRYSTAL. Now, the roster on the 2023 Michigan article would likely get cleaned up over the course of 2023 as there will be a bunch of invested editor eyes on it, but if you do the same for say, Northwestern or Tulsa, such speculative errors could remain on Wikipedia for years. As for the general process of creating rosters for current teams, there is no typical. It's a process that's been insufficiently managed by WP:CFB as evidenced by inconsistency between high-profile teams: compare 2022 Michigan Wolverines football team#Roster and 2022 Ohio State Buckeyes football team#Roster to 2022 Alabama Crimson Tide football team#Roster and 2022 Georgia Bulldogs football team#Roster. We should have a general discussion about rosters at WT:CFB. Jweiss11 (talk) 03:12, 20 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Jweiss11: I don't think our differences are so significant. We both have concerns about premature creation of season articles. It's just a question as to whether a team's next season article can/should be started (i) at the end of the team's regular season, (ii) after the team's bowl game is over, or (iii) after the national championship game has been played. I think the third option is the least appropriate, but I frankly don't see that difference as being very material, or being worthy of a big debate. As for roster errors not getting corrected with transfers in/out, my article creation so far has been limited to pretty major teams where there are many eyes on the prize -- but even so, and in deference to your concern, I left the roster off for the time being on the two most recent ones, e.g., 2023 Wisconsin Badgers football team. As for roster format, I vaguely recall there has been discussion on the topic -- you may want to search for prior discussions before starting a new one. IMO there are even bigger issues in terms of standardization that could be considered -- things have gone a bit crazy to my way of thinking when you look at the mass of stuff included in articles like 2022 Alabama Crimson Tide football team -- one has to wade through a gigantic forest to find core information like the team's schedule.
