2023-24 Schedule introduction
[edit]RockChalk717, I have added (and you have reverted twice now) information from KU on the season opening game against North Carolina Central being played in honor of KU alum and Naismith BHOFer John B. McLendon, Jr. and the McLendon Leadership Initiative.
I think it is an important information "bite" to support both KANSAS and the Initiative, while providing recognition of a KANSAS alum who learned the game under the tutelage of Naismith himself.
But in your reversions you indicate that this is an UNNECESSARY edit. How so? Who determines what is NECESSARY? Are only absolutely NECESSARY items allowed on a page? I thought these pages were supposed to provide INFORMATION to the reader.
I'm a relative novice to this (less than 200 edits) and would appreciate the guidance.
Thank you! LTCUSARet (talk) 19:59, 17 October 2023 (UTC)
- @LTCUSARet: Number one, lose the all the caps. I take that as shouting at me in text form and I've done nothing to deserve that. Second, honoring past and current players is a regular occurrence in college sports. Sometimes it's a jersey retirement, sometimes it's a tribute after their death, sometimes it's something like this. I'm not downplaying his contributions to Kansas basketball at all nor am I insulting anybody or anyone by calling it unnecessary. It's unnecessary because of what I just said. In the grand scheme of things, it's no different than a a jersey retirement, senior night, honoring the anniversary of a championship team, etc. and none of those get included. Things like donating to a disaster relief fund like the Illinois game is different, as that doesn't always happen.--Rockchalk717 23:08, 17 October 2023 (UTC)
- To be honest, I had been considering removing the introduction altogether because once the schedule is set, it doesn't really need an introduction anymore.--Rockchalk717 04:57, 18 October 2023 (UTC)
- First, I was shouting, but I kept my words civil. You ticked me off with what I consider to be your unwarranted reversions.
- Second, as I understand it Wikipedia is set up for interested individuals to contribute to and maintain its content. I recognize and appreciate the time and effort you clearly put into this and other KU pages, but how does that make you the official arbiter with last word on what anyone else wants to add to this or any other page?
- Third, I think the info re: McLendon and The Initiative is significant as it could lead readers to learning more about both him and the organization. I don’t think something needs to be “necessary” in order to be informative, and that is what an encyclopedia should be.
- I would like you to restore the McLendon edit you removed. If you still disagree, I want to dispute your actions.
- Thank you for your prior and future responses.

- @LTCUSARet: Since you're new here, I'll give you this advice: Don't take things personal. People will disagree with you on here. You can't let yourself get upset when that happens.
- Now regarding the discussion. I never once claimed to be "the official arbiter". My reverts were based on several standards that have been long time standards on here. Information in the introduction is based on what would apply to the "gamename=" parameter in the schedule prior to the schedule being finalized. Once the schedule is finalized, as it is now, an introduction is pointless because the introduction is used to state when the schedule will be finalized, planned games that maybe don't have a for sure date yet, etc. Now, I have discovered through my own research about this, that is being called the "John McClendon Classic". I will add that to the gamename parameter and link it to his page and if a section says something about the initiative. I will also completely remove the introduction.--Rockchalk717 20:35, 18 October 2023 (UTC)
- You're more than welcome to expand what I added to John McLendon's page, I just wanted to get something rough down to link in the parameter.--Rockchalk717 20:44, 18 October 2023 (UTC)
- Sorry for the delayed response. I have been otherwise occupied with frankly more important things since then.
- I'm fine with the changes you made that include the mentioning of and the link to the info on the John McLendon Classic. I do think it noteworthy that this was the inaugural edition of this game. Per KU Communications the games will be played in the future, though my KU Comms correspondent did not have information at the time regarding the details for future games.
- Different topic -- I noticed in the Recruiting box containing recruiting service rankings that Scout is still being listed. CBS Sports bought Scout in 2017 and rolled it into 247Sports October 2017. References to Scout can therefore be deleted.

- An additional note - per conference release the Men's Big 12 Tournament 2024 is scheduled to run from 12-16 March. The KU schedule shows 13/14. Not sure what the proper edit should be, and don't want to spend time doing something that might not fit protocol. Thanks. LTCUSARet (talk) 05:27, 16 December 2023 (UTC)
