My thanks to whomever added "In many respects, it is similar to the venerable .45-70 Government", I cannot believe I overlooked that. --There is no replacement for displacement. 02:46, 9 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Parent Case

[edit]

I thought the 458 parent case was an uncut 50 AE case necked down to 458 with the rim narrowed so it would eject? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 128.101.211.182 (talk) 09:30, 12 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Earlier work

[edit]

Someone should mention Barnes' .458 x 1.5" cartridge; while less powerful (500 grains barely subsonic) a slightly shorter version, at 1.312" in length, was actually fielded on an experimental basis in suppressed bolt action rifles in Vietnam. See Barnes' "Cartridges of the World". scot (talk) 16:39, 12 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

NY SAFE Act

[edit]

NY has a ten round limit on ammunition feeding devices. Under NY SAFE act would it be legal to posses a 10 round 458 SOCOM magazine, with no intention of ever putting .223 into it? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2604:6000:CF8A:C200:E99E:80D4:A748:9BF4 (talk) 16:45, 9 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Full Article Overhaul may be needed - Neutrality/Commercial Bias - Ammo Types

[edit]

Having read through the article a number of times I've had growing concerns about the lack of references, especially pertaining to the Ammo Types section. Much if not all of the section seems to be anecdotal or perhaps pulled directly from a manufacturer's product description. There is also concern about the objectiveness of the tone within some of the descriptions. To cite a few:

An accurate bullet with the 458 SOCOM ogive profile makes for flawless functioning.

Great for target shooting, plinking, weapon function testing, and just breaking in the 458 SOCOM beast.

Secondly, neutrality concerns extend to the tone used, as the ammo types comes off as more of a sale's pitch rather than an informative article section; which is why I feel it is necessary to clear the section and review it in its entirety. I will be looking into who contributed to this section after leaving this in talk, as I have a suspicion it may be from an ammo wholesaler or commercial outlet of sorts.

The word Excellent is used 12 times when describing various loads of .458 SOCOM:

  1. The Hornady 500 gr RN is an excellent heavy hitting Jacketed, Lead Core bullet.
  2. A large hollow-point pure copper projectile. Excellent for medium game where over penetration is a concern at ranges under 100 yrds.
  3. An excellent hunting cartridge for medium to large game when penetration is needed along with high energy fluid shock transfer to bring down game quickly.
  4. The 300 gr TTSX or TAC-X was specifically designed for use in the 458 SOCOM. This projectile will "mushroom" at low velocities and it's TTSX profile makes it an excellent choice for ranges 100 yds and beyond.
  5. Excellent medium and large game cartridge, especially for wild boar.
  6. Excellent choice for medium and large dangerous game.
  7. For law enforcement use, it is an excellent round for barrier penetration, and to disable a vehicle.
  8. Excellent for medium and large game cartridge.
  9. (ERVT) Extended Range Visible Tracer: Visual ballistic signature exceeding 150 yards. Use in longer range handgun and machinegun training applications. Excellent for firing demonstrations and for testing firing ranges to determine ricochet vulnerabilities. Bullet Tips Coded RED.
  10. (ERVT) Extended Range Visible Tracer: Visual ballistic signature exceeding 150 yards. Use in longer range handgun and machinegun training applications. Excellent for firing demonstrations and for testing firing ranges to determine ricochet vulnerabilities. Bullet Tips Coded RED.
  11. (ERVT) Extended Range Visible Tracer: Visual ballistic signature exceeding 150 yards. Use in longer range handgun and machinegun training applications. Excellent for firing demonstrations and for testing firing ranges to determine ricochet vulnerabilities. Bullet Tips Coded RED.
  12. Excellent for large game.

It is pretty apparent these were simply pulled from a retailer's site or manufacturer's site without citing them, either someone with commercial interest decided to copy paste it a number of times into the article or an editor was simply lazy.

I'll be looking to overhaul the article and clean it up, but it will take some time.

Have undone most of (223.17.88.249) unsupported edits, virtually all of it was pulled from commercial sources and was not neutral in tone. Article still needs further review for neutrality sake.
