"who currently plays as a left winger for Liga Sagres club Benfica." is liga sagres a contry? should be portugueses club S.L. Benfica... not liga sagres club.

Link to Arsenal

Until a concrete source (or even Tribalfootball) mentions the link to Arsenal, it can't be on the page. If you have a link post it here. PlayCollective 03:34, 7 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Rubbish

This has been confirmed as a hoax on numerous sites. Until Arsenal.com confirm a player joining, they should not be listed as an Arsenal player

Most correct way of this name

It should be Ángel Di Maria. First of all, I don't understand why you just put "Angel" without accent. The Spanish word and the name also need it. Secondly, Di Maria is an Italian surname. Some Argentine people tend to put accents in lots of non-Spanish surnames and that's wrong. You'll see "Píccoli" but not "Schnéider". Why? Just because people may not know the origin of the surnames so they make a mistake. I find the UEFA website justification very vague. Are they some language academy? According to that and what you justify, they make a mistake in Bojan Krkić, because there's no "ć" in Spanish. Of course, it's a Serbian surname an it needs a "ć", as Di Maria doesn't need an accent since it's Italian. Just because everybody does it wrong, doesn't mean here, in Wikipedia, we have to do it wrong as well. I know you won't change this and many other names with the same problem, but I want at least people see how things really are.

Little Angel Is he really called the little angel? He's 5'10 1/2" according to the infobox, which is pretty tall for an Argentinian really. If it's not referenced in a month or so, or someone at least verifies it here, I'm going to delete it. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 213.83.108.10 (talk) 14:45, 5 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Real Madrid transfer

[edit]

Terms have been agreed between the teams, according to the Real Madrid website, they do not say the player has signed a contract they say he will sign and the player is in South Africa and highly unlikely to sign a contract until he returns. Until he signs a contract officially he is a Benfica player and the article should show him as such until we have a reliable citation that he is official not a benfica player. Off2riorob (talk) 22:26, 28 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Tuesday 29th, Guardian an unnamed Benfica source told Portuguese media that the deal was not yet concluded. Trading of the club's shares were suspended pending a statement.http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/2010/jun/29/real-madrid-angel-di-maria

ADP news, Benfica says Di Maria transfer not concluded yet - report (ADPnews) - Jun 29, 2010 - The transfer of Argentine midfielder Angel Di Maria to Real Madrid FC, announced on Monday, is not concluded yet, a source close to Portuguese premier league soccer club Benfica (ELI:SLBEN) told news agency Lusa.http://adpnews.info/?nid=25a7335b6a6d57af

Still not clear . Off2riorob (talk) 14:06, 29 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

It's getting clear now, today the notice it's on benfica's website http://www.slbenfica.pt/Informacao/Futebol/Noticias/noticiasfutebol_futdimaria_290610_63775.asp Also, in the spanish diary as.com says that he signed via Fax from south africa http://www.as.com/futbol/articulo/di-maria-ficha-anos-madrid/dasftb/20100629dasdaiftb_66/Tes. XavierHD (talk) 17:19, 29 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for those links Xavier.this one from Benficas announcement is in the lede now.

This one is interesting from Diario_AS translate claim of signing by fax (is that legal? and just needs to pass a medical. Off2riorob (talk) 16:34, 29 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

It seems to be legal. But it is the first time i read that situation. Maybe, maybe, he will sign a real contract after in madrid, but it's sure that the transfer was done. XavierHD (talk) 17:19, 29 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I agree it looks like it is a done deal, we are lucky in that we are not a news agency and we can afford to take a good look at the issue. I have added the fax detail to the lede and I feel it is plenty for the time being, to me he will not actually be a Real Madrid player until he is standing beside Mourinyo being introduced having passed his medical. If he was to comment that would be great, something like I am a Real Madrid player now...At one point the shares in Benfica where withdrawn from the market but I have not found a citation that they are back on the market yet.Off2riorob (talk) 17:27, 29 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Yes you're right, we only can wait. But, in the lede there is this line that says "there were still reports that the deal was not yet finalized. There was no statement from di María who is currently with Argentina at the World Cup." From the guardian.co.uk right? That notice was posted before the confirmation on benfica's website (in Portugal, football clubs have to go to the "Comissão do Mercado de Valores Mobiliários" http://www.cmvm.pt/en to confirm the transfers. This had delayed the negotiations). So i suggest to replace that line and make the header as it is in the David Silva article (he will join manchester city, and he is in the world cup too). XavierHD (talk) 19:39, 30 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

That does look alright. As per the Silva article. I could support something like that. I have tweaked some of the doubt out of it. Better? Off2riorob (talk) 19:58, 30 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

This is a good reflection of what I was commenting about, in this citatioon at Silvas article there is a quote from him saying ..yes I am going to Man city and I say ggod bye to the other team and am looking forward to playing to Man City...we have nothing like this from Angel, do we? http://www.mcfc.co.uk/News/Team-news/2010/June/Manchester-City-announce-signing-of-David-Silva Off2riorob (talk) 20:24, 30 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Really better, thanks. And no, we have nothing that clear from angel hehe, i know what you're talking about. Check this out, Di Maria talk. XavierHD (talk) 20:31, 30 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Cool, thanks for the translation link, almost a statement but not quite. Best. Off2riorob (talk) 20:44, 30 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

This has been confirmed multiple times on Real Madrid official website. However, it seems that the smaller details of his contract are not announced as closed but his transfer is announced as closed. Here is a link to an article from today that talks about Di Maria as a de facto Real Madrid player: [1]--76.170.29.216 (talk) 03:00, 8 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

OBSERVATION: It would be nice if the first sentence of this article was reworded to be less misleading. The phrase "currently plays for ____" is misleading if it is known as a fact that the player was not returning to said club. There should be a sentence added to the lead paragraph in all of these situations so that A) people who are unaware of current events do not become confused, and so that B) people who are aware of current events do not feel the impulse to edit the article with poorly documented information.

Ignore everything I just wrote. He hasn't passed his medial check yet. You can't consider a transfer finalized until he's cleared his physical. I was under the impression that he had passed his physical In South Africa. Apologies. --76.170.29.216 (talk) 03:03, 8 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

We could almost remove that he plays for Benfica as that seem clear history, but we have come this far and as Xavier has added, tomorrow he is to be presented and we can or you can remove Benfica and proudly fly the Real Madrid flag. Off2riorob (talk) 10:35, 8 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. I did some mayor changes to the lede, all with sources. The presentation will take place between 25-28 July, but he passed the medical test. I think that's all, right? XavierHD (talk) 18:27, 8 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Yes. Thank-you XavierHD! --76.170.29.216 (talk) 14:40, 12 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Good, another thing: The transfer fee... I put the line that is in the lede right now, just to make clear that real madrid paid €25 million and the other €11 millon will be paid at the end of the 2010-11 season, only if the conditions are met. I think that Benfica presented the whole operation to the CMVM to avoid having to stand again next season for the same transfer. XavierHD (talk) 22:05, 16 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Can't you just discuss the matter here or on your talkpage(s) instead of moving it 267 times? I go with di Maria btw. Kante4 (talk) 17:57, 13 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Can you help me? This guy insists that it's Ángel Di María when it's Ángel di María. Also, I included in the last move that it would be better to discuss. The user who keeps switching it to Ángel Di María also keeps citing player profiles as sources, when they aren't always true to the name's proper form. I'd like this to be settled here because it's gotten really, really annoying. Italia2006 (talk) 19:50, 13 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I only know him with di Maria. If you just call him by his last name, it's Di Maria of course. But the article should be "di". Kante4 (talk) 21:49, 13 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

You didn't provide any reliable sources for Ángel di María. The Google database just takes the name from Wikipedia and will be updated in a month or so after this page will have been moved. British transfer record

[edit]

All three sources, from broadsheet newspapers, refer to his transfer as breaking the "British transfer record". As I said in one summary, this is the WP:COMMONNAME as for much of footballing history the English and Scottish leagues were financially equal. '''tAD''' (talk) 21:39, 27 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

English clubs play in the English Premier League, play in cup competitions organised by the English FA, and represent England in UEFA club competitions. Why say he plays for "English team Manchester United" but that he broke the "British record". Bit confusing for those not knowledgeable, which is who the target audience is. Why stop at British? Why ignore Northern Ireland? Why ignore Eire? Why not go all out and say Northern Europe? RealDealBillMcNeal (talk) 22:36, 27 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
The simple answer "why" is that the sources say "British record", just as sources on Celtic's 1967 team (skippered by a fella with your name phonetically) would call them "the first British club to win the European Cup". That wouldn't make people's heads explode and neither does this '''tAD''' (talk) 23:20, 27 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Agreed, the sources all mention that it's a British record. Perhaps if Scotland gains independence they won't be so quick to do so in the future, but while the United Kingdom remains intact, sources will continue to lump them all in together. – PeeJay 23:55, 27 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
All three references state 'British transfer record' and editors on this talk page and WT:FOOTY supports the use of the term. As such, please respect the consensus taken. LRD NO (talk) 00:30, 28 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
None of you have really explained why he plays for "English team Manchester United" but set the "British record". Should we change it to "British team Manchester United"? Football doesn't use political boundaries, so that's just being daft. If we're going off exactly what these newspapers say, we should revert the name of the article back to di María (Rather than Di María) as those sources use a lowercase d in his name. Who wants to do the honours? RealDealBillMcNeal (talk) 01:00, 28 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
And while you're at it, let's change Celtic F.C.'s lead calling them both a "Scottish club" and "first British club to win the European Cup". It's not as mind-boggling as you make out and unlikely to disturb any reader who knows that England is part of Britain '''tAD''' (talk) 01:07, 28 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Who said it was mind-boggling? I merely stated you should write for an audience uninitiated in football, and using "English team" and "British record" could easily be misconstrued. You're right, this isn't mind-boggling, it's common sense to write for an knowledgeable reader. Maybe I should go on Radamel Falcao's article and say his transfer was the most expensive in Monegasque history. You know, to keep it consistent with this "British record" nonsense. RealDealBillMcNeal (talk) 01:51, 28 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
If you can find the reliable sources for that change to Falcao, go ahead '''tAD''' (talk) 12:50, 28 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

International goals and Rosario Central

[edit]

The international goals section is missing a goal he scored against Paraguay on September 10, 2013: http://www.fifa.com/worldcup/matches/round=258419/match=300180910/report.html

I also think a few lines should be written about his early days in Rosario Central, otherwise it looks like he made his debut in Benfica. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 190.179.255.128 (talk) 23:41, 27 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

There was previously a section on his Rosario career, however it was machine translated and thus beyond comprehension. As I have a working knowledge of Spanish, I intend to use sources in the Spanish article to write it better '''tAD''' (talk) 01:01, 28 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

The article isn't correctly structured, with sentences left incomplete (for example, after the "He is known for his big clutch matches sentence").

Additionally, I propose it the sentence should be structured as follows-

He is widely considered as one of greatest players of his generation and one of the greatest Argentine footballers of all time. He is also known for his ability to score in matches of high importance (such as title deciding matches), be it for club or country, having been awarded man of the match for his performances in the 2014 Champions League Final, and the 2021 Copa America final.

He has also scored in every major tournament final that Argentina have played and won since 2021 Copa America, including the 2022 World Cup and the 2022 CONMEBOL-UEFA Cup of Champions. Aryan0230 (talk) 15:50, 20 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
