ScreenPal (formerly known as Screencast-O-Matic) is a cross-platform screen capture and screen recording software originally developed in 2006.[1] The software consists of screen recording, video editing, and hosting tools for communication and learning through visual media.[2][3][4]

History

[edit]

ScreenPal was founded in 2006 as Screencast-O-Matic,[5][6] initially focusing on providing screen capture services.[1] In 2023, it underwent a rebranding to become ScreenPal.[7]

Initially focusing on offering a free screen recording tool compatible with Windows and Mac operating systems, ScreenPal expanded its offerings to include apps for iOS in 2019 and for Android and Chromebook platforms in 2020.[8][9]

ScreenPal launched a video editor in 2015. Initially offered with a free trial, the company opened up free video editing in 2021 and introduced free video recording and editing workflow in 2023.[7]

ScreenPal began offering free video and image hosting in 2019, with premium hosting options for subscribers, leveraging Amazon Web Services (AWS).[7]

In 2022, interactive video quizzing and analytics features were introduced. The same year, ScreenPal launched a video storyboard service called Stories, allowing planning out content in a storyboard and building videos directly from those storyboards.[10]

The company rebranded as ScreenPal in 2023.[8][11]

In 2024, PCMag gave it a 4.5 out of 5 rating, highlighting it as a PCMag Editor's Choice.[12]

Operations

[edit]

The software operates globally with customers in 190 countries worldwide and notable clients like NeilsonIQ, Autodesk, and Festo. The software is integrated into the educational process in more than 100 universities in the United States and worldwide, including the University of Minnesota, Arizona State University, Arlington ISD, the University of Laval, the University of Helsinki, and Karolinska Institute.[13][14][11][9]

Features

[edit]

ScreenPal offers a comprehensive suite of tools and services to facilitate collaborative video creation and sharing. The software includes features such as screen recording, screenshot capture, video editing, image editing, and a video and image hosting service.[14][2][9][15][16]

The ScreenPal product lineup encompasses desktop and mobile applications tailored for screen recording and video editing purposes. Additionally, it offers a video messaging Chrome extension for added convenience.[17]

ScreenPal integrates with learning management systems and business tools, bolstered by support for single sign-on (SSO), user and license management functionalities, privacy, and security controls.[18]
