The Samsung Galaxy A12 is an Android smartphone manufactured by Samsung Electronics. This phone was announced on November 24, 2020 as a successor to the Samsung Galaxy A11.[1]

The Samsung Galaxy A12 was not available in the United States until April 2021.[2][3] The model of the Samsung Galaxy A12 that was made available in the U.S. had 3 GB RAM and a 16 MP main camera, rather than the 48 MP camera found in newer models.

In Europe, Samsung launched the Galaxy A12 at €179 for the 3 GB RAM + 32 GB storage variant, and €199 for the 6 GB RAM + 128 GB storage variant.[4]

Samsung launched the Galaxy A12 in India on February 16, 2021, at a price of Rs.12,999 for the 4 GB RAM + 64 GB storage variant, while the 4 GB RAM + 128 GB storage variant was priced at Rs.13,999. On August 12, 2021, Samsung relaunched the phone with the Exynos 850 SoC in India.[5][6] This variant could be purchased in 4 GB RAM + 64 GB storage and 6 GB RAM + 128 GB storage configurations. The 4 GB RAM model cost Rs. 13.999 and 6 GB RAM model cost Rs. 16.499, respectively.

In North America, Samsung launched the Galaxy A12 April 2021 for the price of US$180 for the 4 GB + 64 GB internal storage model, while in other countries like Canada selling the 3 GB + 32 GB for C$220. It also comes with the MediaTek Helio P35 chipset.

On August 9, 2021, a new variant of the phone called the Samsung Galaxy A12 Nacho was announced. This variant of the phone is powered by Samsung's in-house Exynos 850[7] SoC with an octa-core CPU and 8nm process instead of the previous MediaTek Helio P35 SoC, in addition to the operating system being updated to Android 11.[8][9] Aside from these differences, both the Galaxy A12 and Galaxy A12 Nacho have very similar specifications, where the Nacho variant supports both 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz Wi-Fi protocols, whilst the prior model supported only 2.4Ghz.[10]

Specifications

[edit]

Hardware

[edit]

Display

[edit]

The Galaxy A12 has a 6.5 in (170 mm) IPS LCD display with 720 × 1600 resolution and a 60 Hertz Refresh rate.[11]

Storage & Memory

[edit]

The phone has a dedicated slot for microSDXC and internal storage configurations of: 32 GB, 64 GB, and 128 GB as well as memory configurations of 3GB, 4GB, and 6GB.[12]

Processor

[edit]

The phone is powered by Mediatek MT6765 Helio P35 System-on-Chip (SoC), which is built on a 12-nanometer (nm) process technology. This SoC features an octa-core CPU that is divided into two clusters- a high-performance cluster and a power-efficient cluster. The high-performance cluster comprises four Cortex-A53 cores that are clocked at 2.3 GHz, while the power-efficient cluster also consists of four Cortex-A53 cores that are clocked at 1.8 GHz.

The Mediatek MT6765 Helio P35 SoC also comes with an integrated IMG PowerVR GE8320 GPU that operates at 680MHz.[12]

Cameras

[edit]

The Samsung Galaxy A12 features 4 rear-facing cameras housed in a black rounded square with a separate LED flash. The main camera is a 48 MP sensor with f/2.0 aperture, 26mm focal length and autofocus. The ultrawide camera is an 8 MP unit with f/2.2 aperture and 123° field of view (FoV). Both the macro camera (for close-up shots) and the depth sensor (for background blur) are 2 MP sensors with f/2.4 aperture. The front-facing camera has an 8 MP resolution. Video can be recorded at up to 1080p at 30 fps on the main, ultrawide and selfie cameras.[12]

Battery & Other

[edit]

The phone has a 5000mAh Li-Po non-removable battery that can be fast charged (15 W) through the USB-C port situated between the 3.5 mm headphone jack and the single loudspeaker. The fingerprint sensor is integrated into the power button on the right.[12][13]

Software

[edit]

The smartphone shipped with One UI Core 2.5 over Android 10, preloaded with many standard Google apps. An official update to One UI Core 4 and Android 12 was made available during August-September 2022. The Nacho version was released with One UI Core 3.1 and Android 11. It is promised to have at least two large OS Updates in its lifetime. They both come with Samsung Knox, aided by McAfee's virus protection.[14]
