Rowmari (Raumari, Bengali: রৌমারী) is an upazila of Kurigram District in the Division of Rangpur, Bangladesh.[3]
Geography
[edit]Rowmari is located at 25°33′45″N 89°51′00″E / 25.5625°N 89.8500°E. It has 46,871 households and a total area 197.03 km2.
The upazila is bounded by Ulipur Upazila and Assam state of India on the north, Char Rajibpur Upazila on the south, Assam state of India on the east, Char Rajibpur, Chilmari and Ulipur upazilas on the west.
Demographics
[edit]According to the 2011 Census of Bangladesh, Raomari Upazila had 46,871 households and a population of 196,417. 49,712 (25.31%) were under 10 years of age. Raomari had a literacy rate (age 7 and over) of 34.57%, compared to the national average of 51.8%, and a sex ratio of 1051 females per 1000 males. 25,680 (13.07%) lived in urban areas.[5][6]
As of the 1991 Census of Bangladesh, Rowmari has a population of 137,040. Males constitute 49.34% of the population, and females 50.66%. This Upazila's eighteen up population is 63884. Raomari has an average literacy rate of 16.5% (7+ years), and the national average of 32.4% literate.[7]
Administration
[edit]Raumari Thana was formed in 1908 and it was turned into an upazila on 1 August 1983.[8]
Raomari Upazila is divided into six union parishads: Bondober, Dadevanga, Chor Shoulemari, Jadurchar, Raumari, and Shoulemari. The union parishads are subdivided into 29 mauzas and 198 villages.[5]
