Ricardo Munguía Pérez (born June 5, 1975) is a Mexican retired footballer who played as a defender.[1]
Club career
[edit]Career
[edit]Munguía debuted with Veracruz on November 13, 1993 in a 1–1 draw against Puebla.[2]
In 1999, he played abroad in the USL A-League with the Toronto Lynx.[3][4] On July 17, 2007, Munguía went on trial with the Serbian White Eagles in the Canadian Soccer League (CSL).[5] His trial was successful and he joined the club a few days later after his international transfer was approved by the Ontario Soccer Association.[6] He debuted for the club on August 10, 2007 in a 6–3 win over the North York Astros.[6] Munguía was an integral part of the White Eagles squad but injured his knee in the semifinal against the Trois-Rivières Attak thus missing out on the final against Toronto Croatia.[7]
Munguía (known in Mexico as El Ringo) was captain of Albinegros for the 2010 season.[8] Munguía re-joined the Serbian White Eagles before the 2011 CSL season.[8] He helped the Serbs secure a playoff berth by finishing fifth in the division.[9] In the opening round of the postseason, Serbia advanced to the semifinals by defeating Brampton City United.[10] Their playoff journey concluded in the following round after being eliminated by the Ottawa-based Capital City.[11]
In 2015, he returned to the CSL circuit, to function as a player-coach for Scarborough SC.[12]
International career
[edit]He was part of the Mexican national under-20 team that played in the 1993 FIFA World Youth Championship.[13] He also won a silver medal with Mexico at the 1995 Pan American Games.[14]
Managerial career
[edit]Munguía was named the head coach in 2016 for Scarborough SC in the Canadian Soccer League.[15] He led the eastern Toronto club to a playoff berth by finishing third in the league's first division.[16] In the postseason, Scarborough was eliminated in the opening round by Hamilton City.[17]
He is also an academy coach for Cherry Beach Soccer Club.[14]
Personal
[edit]His father Ricardo Munguía Padilla (also nicknamed Ringo) was also a footballer.[18]
