Preah Khan Reach Svay Rieng Football Club (Khmer: ក្លឹបបាល់ទាត់ព្រះខ័នរាជស្វាយរៀង), also known as Svay Rieng for short,[1] is a professional football club based in Krong Svay Rieng, Svay Rieng province, that plays in the Cambodian Premier League.[2] The club have won 3 league titles and a record of 5 Hun Sen Cup.

History

[edit]

The club was founded in 1997 by General Sao Sokha, and was originally based in Phnom Penh, under the name Preah Khan Reach. In 2011, the club win their first major honours by winning the 2011 Hun Sen Cup after winning against Build Bright United 2–0 where Sam El Nasa and Khoun Laboravy scored the goal to help Preah Khan Reach to lift the trophy. In the following season, the club also managed to retained their title in the 2012 Hun Sen Cup after winning against Nagacorp 2–1 after extra time.

In May 2013, the club was renamed as Preah Khan Reach Svay Rieng, when the decision was made to relocate to Svay Rieng by Dy Vichea’s home province. In the club first season under the new name, they ended up becoming the 2013 season league champions. The club then automatically qualified for the 2014 AFC President's Cup being placed against Nepali club Manang Marshyangdi Club and Mongolian club Erchim. However, Svay Rieng lost both of their fixtures and finished last in the group table.

In 2019, Svay Rieng won their second league title in their history which also sees the team qualified to the 2020 AFC Cup qualifying play-offs playing against Laos side Master 7. Svay Rieng ended up winning both of the qualifying match with a 7–1 aggregate which sees the team qualified to the group stage. The club was then placed in Group G alongside Philippines club Ceres–Negros, Indonesian club Bali United and Vietnamese club Than Quảng Ninh. On 25 February 2020, the club recorded their first win in the AFC competition after defeating Bali United 2–1. However, due to the rising cases of the COVID-19 pandemic, the tournament was cancelled.

Svay Rieng then won their third league title during the 2023–24 season where they qualified for the 2024–25 AFC Challenge League and also participated in the returning 2024–25 ASEAN Club Championship. The club then faces off against Laos side Young Elephants in the ASEAN Club Championship play-off round where they won 8–3 on aggregate thus qualifying to Group A alongside Malaysian club Terengganu, Thailand club BG Pathum United, Indonesian club PSM Makassar, Vietnamese club Đông Á Thanh Hóa and Myanmar club Shan United. On 21 August 2024, Svay Rieng won 3–2 against Terengganu at the Sultan Mizan Zainal Abidin Stadium.
