The concept of a Bangladesh–Pakistan Nuclear Treaty emerged as a proposal in 2024 following growing anti-Indian sentiment in Bangladesh. A notable advocate for this idea, Professor Shahiduzzaman of Dhaka University, argued that Bangladesh should seek a nuclear agreement with Pakistan as a counterbalance to India's military power.[1] This idea was driven by concerns over India's increasing influence and military capabilities in the region. The professor suggested that such a treaty would bolster Bangladesh's national security and provide a deterrent against perceived Indian aggression. This proposal stirred considerable debate within Bangladesh, with critics warning that it could destabilize regional peace and provoke international backlash, particularly from the United States and its allies. While the proposal reflects a shift in Bangladesh's geopolitical orientation, especially as Anti-Indian sentiment has risen in some circles following the end of Sheikh Hasina's leadership during the Student–People's uprising.[2]

As Bangladesh seeks greater "strategic autonomy" and defense reforms, especially under the current government, a nuclear treaty with Pakistan, a fellow non-NPT state, would signal a robust counter to India's influence. This alliance could force India to reconsider its aggressive stance and foster more equitable negotiations, particularly over sensitive issues such as border disputes, water-sharing agreements, and trade imbalances.[3][1] A combined nuclear deterrent from Bangladesh and Pakistan would challenge India's regional policies and compel India to engage in more balanced dialogues, prioritizing Bangladesh's sovereignty and addressing long-standing disputes.[citation needed]
