Expansion

[edit]

@Oshwah, I have to challenge your recent edits to this message, which increase its length again after the streamlining I did last April.

In order for people to read this, it's crucial that it be as short as possible, but your additions make it significantly longer without really adding much to justify the length. For instance, you expanded Please keep in mind: to Please keep the following information in mind when sending your message:. The colon already implies that it's the following information that we want them to keep in mind, and the "when sending your message" part is already implied by the situation. Similarly, you expanded Sending an email will generate a notification for [recipient] to Sending an email will generate a notification for [recipient] in order to make them aware of its arrival. The purpose of notifications is to make people aware of things, so the relevant information is already conveyed.

The part of the message that you expanded the most is the disclaimery bit in small font, a portion of which you made bold (something that sends mixed visual signals—small says it's not important but bold says it is). Most of what you wrote is just general advice about internet privacy; we don't have the space in our instructional messages to teach basic internet literacy, and in 2022 I don't think it's all that necessary to remind people e.g. that things you share over email can be forwarded to others.

Overall, I think the message even in its recent state was too long and was likely getting glossed over, so making it even longer is definitely a step in the wrong direction. I'm not able to revert for a normal BRD, but I'd appreciate if you'd be willing to return it to the status quo and seek consensus if you still wish to make these changes. Sdkbtalk 06:49, 9 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Sdkb - Sure, no problem - Done. ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 07:28, 9 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Oshwah, thanks—there's definitely some room for improving the message, so if you have tweaks you'd like to workshop, I'd be happy to collaborate on that. Cheers, Sdkbtalk 07:31, 9 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

It is probably a good idea to hide this message for Special:EmailUser/Oversight (in particular, we should not tell users that it is okay to use the talk page). Please change {{#ifeq:{}|Arbitration_Committee|| to {{#ifeq:{}|Arbitration_Committee||{{#ifeq:{}|Oversight|| HouseBlastertalk 02:53, 31 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Not done (not yet) @HouseBlaster: simply suppressing this on that page would leave oversight with only the message in User:Oversight/Emailnotice, which I don't think is sufficient there. User talk:Oversight is also a protected redirect, so there is no worry about someone actually leaving a message there. If this is going to be turned off for Oversight, a parallel change should be done to expand the user-specific emailnotice. — xaosflux Talk 13:41, 31 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Please change certain privileged users to CheckUsers per MOS:EGG. Thanks! HouseBlaster (talk · he/him) 02:50, 28 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

The issue is that it is not clear what a "CheckUser" is to anyone who isn't a veteran Wikipedian. The current version uses plain English much better. Sdkbtalk 03:34, 28 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Would certain privileged users (known as "CheckUsers") work better? HouseBlaster (talk · he/him) 03:55, 28 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
That seems alright, if we deem it important enough to be worth the extra text (which I'm ambivalent about). Overall, everything in the small text is disclaimer-y anyways. Sdkbtalk 05:35, 28 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Can the above statement be converted into a single sentence. This shows that there is a connection between the two points. I believe that the updated version coveys that Because it is in plain text, wiki markup wont work. ~/Bunnypranav:<ping> 15:38, 3 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
