Places and cities
[edit]This section explains how to stylize Wikipedia articles which are related to places and cities in Egypt.
Page title
[edit]Rules:
- The page title of the article must match the English official name of the city/place.
- For naming conventions, see naming conventions for official name for details.
Styling:
- If there is a conflict with another page on Wikipedia, append the type of the place (city, district, markaz, or neighborhood) between parenthesis to disambiguate it. For instance: Cleopatra (neighborhood).
Examples:
Lead paragraph
[edit]Rules:
- English:
- All cities of Egypt, with no exception, must have their English name(s) listed in the lead paragraph (at the very beginning).
- If different variants/dialects are to be provided, use the official name first, optionally followed by alternative names.
- For naming conventions, see naming conventions for official name and naming conventions for alternative names.
- Arabic:
- All cities of Egypt, with no exception, must have their Arabic name(s) listed in the lead paragraph, right after the English official and alternative names.
- If different variants/dialects are to be provided, use the official Standard Arabic name first, optionally followed by the Egyptian Arabic variation(s) if there are any.
- For naming conventions, see naming conventions for native Arabic names.
- Coptic:
- All cities of Egypt, with no exception, must have their Coptic name(s) listed in the lead paragraph, right after the Arabic native names.
- If different variants/dialects are to be provided, use the following order: Bohairic Coptic comes first, then Sahidic Coptic, then Fayyumic Coptic, then other dialects (in any order). It is recommended to include the Bohairic Coptic name for all the cities, whenever possible.
- For naming conventions, see naming conventions for native Coptic names.
- Greek:
- Hellenized cities of Egypt are recommended have their Greek name(s) listed in the lead paragraph, right after Coptic native names.
- If different variants/dialects are to be provided, any order is fine.
- For naming conventions, see naming conventions for native Greek names.
Styling:
- The lead paragraph consists of:
- The official name (must match page title).
- The following items, between parentheses (separated by semicolon):
- Optional pronunciation/respelling for the official name.
- If there are alternative names:
- The word "also", followed by colon.
- Alternative names in bold, separated by comma (with optional pronunciation/respelling for each name).
- Native language/dialect 1 (Ex: Arabic, Egyptian Arabic, Coptic, Bohairic Coptic, etc.)
- Language name (and a colon):
- Arabic language names: "Arabic" (the official name), and "Egyptian Arabic" or "Colloquial Egyptian" (slang names).
- Coptic language names: "Coptic" (all names), or alternatively you can use "Bohairic Coptic", "Sahidic Coptic", etc.
- Greek language names: "Greek", "Ancient Greek", "Koine Greek", etc.
- Native names in that language, separated by comma (with optional pronunciation/respelling for each name).
- Language name (and a colon):
- Native language/dialect 2.
- Native language/dialect 3.
- ...
- Summarized description for the place.
Examples:
- Alexandria (/ˌælɪɡˈzændriə/; Arabic: الإسكندرية al-ʾIskandariyya; Egyptian Arabic: اسكندرية Eskendereyya; Coptic: ⲣⲁⲕⲟϯ Rakodī; Greek: Αλεξάνδρεια Alexandria) is a city in Egypt.
- Cairo (/ˈkaɪroʊ/ KY-roh; ...) is a city in Egypt.
- Antinopolis (/ˌæntjˈnɒpɒlɪs/; also: Antinoopolis /ˌæntjˈnoʊpɒlɪs/; ...) is a city in Egypt.
Infobox
[edit]Rules:
- English:
- All cities of Egypt, with no exception, must have their English name listed in the infobox (at the heading line).
- Only use the official name of the place. No need to list the alternative names in the infobox.
- For naming conventions, see naming conventions for official name.
- Arabic:
- All cities of Egypt, with no exception, must have their Arabic name(s) listed in the infobox, right bellow the English official name.
- Standard Arabic names should go before the Egyptian Arabic names.
- For naming conventions, see naming conventions for native Arabic names.
- Coptic:
- All cities of Egypt, with no exception, must have their Coptic name(s) listed in the infobox, right bellow Arabic native names.
- Bohairic Coptic names should go first.
- For naming conventions, see naming conventions for native Coptic names.
- Greek:
- Hellenized cities of Egypt are recommended have their Greek name(s) listed in the lead paragraph, right bellow Coptic native names.
- Greek names can be arranged in any order.
- For naming conventions, see naming conventions for native Greek names.
Styling:
- The heading of the infobox:
- For the name field, you should use the official name of the place (must match page title).
- For the native_name field, It is recommended to use three collapsible lists; one for each native language:
- Collpasible list for Arabic:
- List title: the official Standard Arabic name for the place, followed by the word 'Arabic' in parentheses.
- Expanded-mode, line 1: the official Standard Arabic name again, followed by colon, followed by pronunciation respelling, followed by the word 'Standard Arabic' between parentheses.
- Expanded-mode, line n: nth Arabic name, followed by colon, followed by pronunciation respelling, followed by the word 'Standard Arabic' or 'Egyptian Arabic' between parentheses.
- Collpasible list for Coptic:
- List title: Coptic names, separated by comma, followed by the word 'Coptic' in parentheses. If you want to save space, you can choose to include only two names in the title, and include all the remaining names in the expansion lines of the list. Since the title needs to be concise, the word 'Coptic' is enough. Dialect information will be included in expansion lines.
- Expanded-mode, line nth: nth Coptic name, followed by colon, followed by pronunciation respelling, followed by any of these words (between parentheses): 'Coptic', 'Bohairic Coptic', 'Sahidic Coptic', 'Fayyumic Coptic', etc.
- Collpasible list for Greek:
- Title: Greek names, separated by comma, followed by the word 'Greek' in parentheses.
- Expanded-mode, line nth: nth Greek name, followed by colon, followed by pronunciation respelling, followed by any of these words (between parentheses): 'Greek', 'Koine Greek', 'Ancient Greek', etc.
- Collpasible list for Arabic:
