The Lumen metabolism tracker is a product for measuring metabolism,[1] developed and marketed by MetaFlow Ltd., d.b.a. Lumen.[2]

Overview

[edit]

Lumen is a health and wellness technology company founded in 2018 by twin sisters Merav and Michal Mor.[3] The company specializes in providing personalized nutrition insights through a handheld device that measures metabolism via breath analysis. Lumen's headquarters are located in Tel Aviv, with additional offices in New York and London. The company's core mission is to empower individuals to improve their metabolic health by offering real-time, personalized recommendations.

Lumen received initial funding through a combination of venture capital investments[4] and a crowdfunding campaign on Indiegogo.[5]

Lumen held another fundraising round in 2022, securing $62 million.[6]

Technology

[edit]

Lumen's technology is based on the concept of metabolic flexibility, which refers to the body's ability to switch between burning carbohydrates and fats for fuel. The device measures the concentration of carbon dioxide (CO2) in a user's breath, which helps determine the type of fuel being utilized by the body.

Breath analysis

[edit]

At the core of Lumen's technology is its breath analysis capability. When a user exhales into the device, it measures the CO2 levels in their breath. Higher CO2 levels typically indicate carbohydrate metabolism, while lower levels suggest fat metabolism. This real-time analysis allows users to adjust their nutritional intake to optimize metabolic health.

Scientific validation

[edit]

Two studies conducted in 2021 found that Lumen's device could detect changes in metabolic fuel utilization comparable to those measured by laboratory-standard metabolic carts. Both studies included co-authors employed by MetaFlow Ltd., or who had been scientific advisors to MetaFlow Ltd. [7][8]
