Two major sporting events were scheduled to be held in the Arena prior to its eventual opening, but both of these events were canceled and subsequently relocated — the 1994 FIBA World Championship due to the Yugoslav Wars and the international sanctions imposed to the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, and the 1999 World Table Tennis Championships due to the NATO bombing of Yugoslavia.
