Lepton is a village near Huddersfield, in the civil parish of Kirkburton, in the Kirklees district of West Yorkshire, England. It is 4.25 miles (7 km) to the east of Huddersfield on the A642 road, 120 metres (390 ft) above the town centre directly north of Lepton Great Wood.

History

The name "Lepton" may mean 'leap farm/settlement'.[1] Lepton was recorded in the Domesday Book as Leptone.[2] Lepton was formerly a township in the parish of Kirkheaton,[3] in 1866 Lepton became a separate civil parish, in 1894 Lepton became an urban district, on 1 April 1938 the district was abolished and merged with Kirkburton Urban District.[4] On 1 April 1938 the parish was abolished and merged with Kirkburton.[5] In 1931 the parish had a population of 3,323.[6]
