Jamalpur Sadar (Bengali: জামালপুর সদর) is an upazila of Jamalpur District in the Division of Mymensingh, Bangladesh.[4]

Geography

Jamalpur Sadar is located at 24°55′00″N 89°57′30″E / 24.9167°N 89.9583°E / 24.9167; 89.9583. It has 152,174 households and a total area of 508.80 km2. It is bounded by Sherpur district to the north, Mymensingh district to the east, Tangail district of Dhaka division to the south, and Melandaha, Madarganj and Sarishabari upazilas on the west.[4]

According to the 2011 Census of Bangladesh, Jamalpur Sadar Upazila had 152,174 households and a population of 615,072. 138,656 (22.54%) were under 10 years of age. Jamalpur Sadar has a literacy rate (age 7 and over) of 47.0%, compared to the national average of 51.8%, and a sex ratio of 1037 females per 1000 males. 150,172 (24.42%) lived in urban areas.[6][7]

Par the 2001 Bangladesh census, Jamalpur sadar upazila had a population of 568726; males constituted 290159, females 278567; Muslim 556986, Hindu 10807, Buddhist 299, Christian 36 and others 598. Indigenous communities such as Garo and Koch belong to this upazila.[4][8]

According to the 1991 Bangladesh census, Jamalpur Sadar had a population of 501,924, of whom 263,338 were aged 18 or over. Males constituted 51.47% of the population, and females 48.53%. Jamalpur Sadar had an average literacy rate of 27.6% (7+ years), against the national average of 32.4% .[8]

Jamalpur Sadar Upazila is divided into Jamalpur Municipality and 15 union parishads: Banshchara, Digpaith, Ghoradhap, Itail, Kendua, Lakshmir Char, Meshta, Narundi, Ranagachha, Rashidpur, Sahabajpur, Sharifpur, Sreepur, Titpalla, and Tulsir Char. The union parishads are subdivided into 250 mauzas and 365 villages.[9]
