Gercüş (Kurdish: Kercews/Kercoz,[2][3] Classical Syriac: ܟܦܪ ܓܘ̈ܙܐ, romanized: Kfar Gawze, lit. 'village of walnuts'"[4]), formerly known as Kerçüş, is a town and seat of the Gercüş District of Batman Province in Turkey. The mayor is Gündüz Günaydın (AKP), elected in 2019.[5]
The population was 6,064 in 2021.[1]
Neighborhoods
[edit]The town is divided into the neighborhoods of Bağlarbaşı, Çukurçeşme, Pınarbaşı and Yolağzı.[6]
History
[edit]The town of Gercus is said to be built by a wealthy Roman soldier named "Gawson" who named the village after him.[7] The town was formerly populated by Assyrians but mainly Kurds from the Kercoz tribe live in the town today.[8]
