I scanned this image from an original copy of the book "Startling Experiences: War in China", published 1900, and tagged it in accordance with Wikipedia practices at the time it was uploaded. I have no objection to modifying the tag or info in line with more recent updates of practices, but retain the right to revert changed tags that claim the artist has been dead 100 years unless the person making such a change can provide collaborative information on such a claim. -- Infrogmation 18:56, 27 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

It's a good image, but unless the author happened to keel over < 4 or 5 years after drawing it, it hasn't been 100 years since his death, no? We should error on the side of caution--we don't want to say "We don't think there's a copyright issue, so we'll put it up unless we find out we are wrong..." Yes, Taeguk Warrior figured out a legitimate answer with "PD-US". Good! Let's see how long before that tag is depreciated or has it's meaning changed too. Well, it's managed to hang on for a couple years now; hopefully it will last--you couldn't find a better image describing the feelings at the time. I'm sorry to list it without realizing that others were tagging it in a rather odd way... So, do we just leave the entry on the possibly unfree page? Or strike it out, remove it, something else? I was about to ask you if you'd object to removing the WP:PUI listing now. As no one seems to be disputing it now, I think you could remove the listing now with the edit comment "resolved".
