This image is not a J-6 Whirlwind R-975, but a J-4B Whirlwind.

[edit]

Despite the title of the original Flickr image, which I assume was taken from the museum's placard, this engine is not a J-6 Whirlwind R-975. Comparing the cylinder cross-section with several shown on page 3 of the article Wright J-5 "Whirlwind", the engine appears to be the older, smaller J-4B Whirlwind. In particular, look at the structure of the valves and valve ports and the arrangement of the cylinder cooling fins, which are very similar to the J-4B but quite different from the J-5. Since the J-5's cylinder design was a great improvement over the earlier Whirlwinds, I assume that the J-6 cylinder would look more like a J-5 than like a J-4B.

I will rename the image accordingly.

OK, I chickened out and didn't rename the image. It looks rather complicated to do so while keeping the associated information intact. Still needs doing, though.--Colin Douglas Howell 05:59, 30 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
